Abstract The possible interference of resistant pest’s populations to insecticides in natural enemies in the action thas not been clarified yet. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) performance on Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) eggs with resistance frequency to the Metaflumizone over six generations of product exposure. Egg cards (2.0 x 7.0 cm) containing eggs from two populations of S. frugiperda, (resistant to Metaflumizone and the other susceptible), were exposed to T. pretiosum females for 24 hours in free-choice and no-choice testing in three generations (G1, G4, and G6). A completely randomized experimental design was used with 25 replications, each consisting of an egg card (experimental unit) containing 20 eggs. The parameters evaluated were: parasitism (%), emergence (%), sex ratio, number of emerged parasitoids per egg and males/females longevity. ANOVA and Tukey test (P≤ 0.05) were applied on the results. Results showed a reduction in parasitism [41.0% (G1) and 28.4% (G4)], egg emergence (17.5%) and parasitoids/egg [16.2 (G4) and 17.2 (G6)] in eggs originating from the population with resistance frequency. Females emerging from G6 populations eggs without exposure to Metaflumizone had greater longevity (3.5 days more) than the resistant population. The sex ratio and male longevity were not affected. The results indicate a reduction in T. pretiosum activity if S. frugiperda populations have some frequency of resistance to Metaflumizone.

A new material formed by Shiff base (chitosan and ortho-vanillin) and copper were synthesized and characterized by UV-visible, infrared spectroscopies, thermal analysis, elemental analysis, electron microscopy, 1H NMR spectra and electrochemical techniques. In this study, it was possible to identify the formation of Schiff’s base (BS), with a degree of substitution of 42.5% by NMR. The electron microscopy study indicates an amorphous character for BS. The material was used to build an electrode, which proved to be sensitive to the addition of nitrite, making it possible to quantify it. The values obtained for detection limit and limit of quantification of the electrode formed BS-Cu were 0.062 µmol L-1 and 0.21 µmol L-1, respectively.

Abstract This paper presents the implementation of a 3-bit microstrip fractal-based phase shifter operating in the 430 MHz to 470 MHz frequency range. The fractal structure is used to confine different delay line lengths in the same area due to the space-filling properties of the used Hilbert fractal curve. The proposed design has three bits corresponding to 45, 90, and 180 degrees phase changes selected according to the switching circuit based on a Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT) switch implemented with PIN diodes. Comparisons between simulated and measured results are shown according to the chosen degree of use of PIN diodes.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate meat yield and centesimal composition of the Amazonian fish species, A. ocellatus, P. castelnaeana, and L. friderici, in the dry and flood seasonal cycles of rivers. In each seasonal cycle (flood and dry), a total of 60 fish were collected, comprising 20 specimens of each of the following species: A. ocellatus, P. castelnaeana, and L. friderici. Were evaluated the meat yield, cuts yield and centesimal composition of the fish samples. Meat yield in the clean body cuts and skinless filet varied between species and hydrological period. The results showed that seasonal variation influenced the centesimal composition and yield of the species studied, with significant differences between the cuts produced during processing. These findings highlight the need to apply a variety of technological processes to ensure efficient use of these species throughout the year. The total waste represented more than 50% of the whole fish, and the head size was directly proportional to the amount of waste generated. These results underscore the importance of waste utilization for animal and/or human nutrition.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a Gram negative bacterium considered to be the etiologic agent of various gastric diseases. The prevalence of bacterial infection varies according to age, geographic location, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. The chronic infection caused by microorganism can favor the development of severe pathologies such as gastric adenocarcinoma. In this sense, early diagnosis is essential for a better prognosis and therapeutic success. Several diagnostic methods performed using invasive and non-invasive techniques, with different sensitivity and specificity, have been used in the detection of H. pylori. Objective: To compare the performance of the molecular and histopathological technique used in the diagnosis of H. pylori infection. Methods: 76 gastric tissue samples were collected from dyspeptic patients who underwent molecular and histopathological diagnosis. Molecular detection was performed using the ribosomal gene (16S rRNA) using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. Results: The PCR-based molecular diagnostic method detected the bacterium in 63.1% of the samples, while the histopathological test identified the microorganism in only 38.1% of gastric biopsies. The data demonstrated that the PCR technique was about 1.6 times more sensitive than the histopathological technique. Conclusion: The PCR technique was the most efficient diagnostic method for detecting H. pylori and can be implemented in the laboratory routine as a complementary test for the early detection of H. pylori.

Abstract This study processed and characterized the biphasic ceramics Na2Ti3O7/Na2Ti6O13 that were obtained from semi-crystalline nanoparticles synthesized using sonochemical methods. Structural characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, were used to identify the crystalline phases present. The Rietveld refinement revealed, among other structural parameters, the presence of two crystalline phases in compositions of 55.90% and 44.10% for sodium hexatitanate and trititanate, respectively. Via Raman spectroscopy, the presence of the main vibrational modes that correspond to the phases present in biphasic ceramics was confirmed. Finally, by using complex impedance spectroscopy, a decrease in the electrical resistance of both the grain (106 Ω-104 Ω) and its boundary (108 Ω -105 Ω) under increasing temperature was identified.

Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of internet gaming disorder (IGD) and associated risk factors in a sample of secondary and postsecondary students from a public federal institution of higher education (Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia) in Southern Brazil. Methods: The study included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-BR), the Mini-Social Phobia Inventory (Mini-SPIN), and the Game Addiction Scale (GAS). Finally, IGD was measured with the Brazilian version of the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short-Form (IGDS9-SF), which has been psychometrically validated in this population. Results: Overall, 38.2% (n=212) of the sample exhibited IGD symptoms, with 18.2% (n=101) being classed as at-risk gamers. Regression analysis found IGD to be associated with male gender, severe depressive symptoms, poor sleep quality, increased time spent gaming, and total free time spent gaming (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The prevalence of IGD in this sample was relatively high, and associated risk factors found were similar to those previously reported in the literature. Further studies investigating the epidemiology of IGD in Brazilian samples are warranted to better understand treatment needs and inform preventive measures in this population.

Abstract In this paper a 2-4 GHz microstrip IFM (Instantaneous Frequency Measurement) subsystem that uses Wilkinson power dividers, frequency discriminators based on band-stop filters and a DC arduino section is reported. The device uses band-stop filters as an alternative to delay lines, commonly used for IFM. The resonators are responsible for frequency adjustment, according to half guided wavelength resonator length, and the distance between the transmission line and the resonator. A fully micro-controlled 125 MHz resolution IFM subsystem is designed and tested. Results of the IFM subsystem composed by filters, 4-way power dividers and an Arduino board are described.

The compounds nitrosyl cis-[Ru(bpy)(phen)TU(NO)](PF6)3 (compound 1) and cis-[Ru(bpy)(phen)(4-N-Imd)(NO)](PF6)3 (compound 2) (bpy = 2,2’-bipyridine, phen = 1,10’-phenanthroline, TU = thiourea and 4-N-Imd = 4-nitroimidazole) were synthesized and characterized by UV-visible, infrared spectroscopies and electrochemical techniques. In the study of the reactivity it was possible to verify the nitric oxide labilization by square wave voltammetry and a photochemical upon blue light irradiation. This feature is very important for a potential application in phototherapy. Additionally, the antibacterial activity of the nitrosyl complexes was tested against gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Thus, it has been observed that the complexes are capable of inhibiting the growth of such microorganisms.

Abstract In recent years, natural products with antifungal and antioxidant activities are being increasingly researched for a more sustainable alternative to the chemicals currently used for the same purpose. The plant pathogenic fungus Alternaria alternata is a causative agent of diseases in citrus, leading to huge economic losses. Antioxidants are important for the production of medicines for various diseases that may be related to the presence of free radicals, such as cancer, and in the cosmetic industry as an anti-aging agent and the food industry as preservatives. This study evaluated the antifungal and antioxidant potential of extracts of mature leaves of Myrcia splendens, a tree species that occurs in the Brazilian Cerrado. The antioxidant potential was analyzed by an assay of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging method, and the antifungal activity was assessed through the evaluation of mycelial growth. Majority of the extracts exhibited a strong antioxidant activity, especially the acetonic extract (4A). The antioxidant activity may be related to the presence of phenolic compounds. However, the extracts showed no inhibitory activity of mycelial growth of the fungus tested, with the exception of dichloromethanic extract (2B), which had an inhibitory effect (10.2%) at the end of testing.

One experimental strategy to prepare a nitrosyl metal complex is based on the acid-base conversion of NO2- into NO+. Here, we employed UV-vis absorption and FTIR spectroscopies to investigate the reaction of cis-[Ru(NO2)(bpy)2(imN)]PF6 with H3O+, which produced cis-[Ru(NO)(bpy)2(imN)](PF6)3 complex. Chromatographic studies were carried out and showed that immediately after nitrite complex was dissolved only one species was present with retention time(tR) of 6.81 minutes. Addition of H3O+ to nitrite complex led to the formation of one major peak with tR of 3.92 min supporting nitrosyl complex formation. The reaction of nitrosyl complex with cysteine was also monitored by HPLC and it showed clearly the formation and followed decrease of a peak at 3.38 minute with maximum absorption at 380 nm, consistent with an intermediate complex. Later, it was observed the appearance of a peak at 4.15 minute with absorption band at 470 nm. In contrast to the reaction with cysteine, methionine did not show the formation of any intermediate. The use of HPLC was an important tool to support mechanistic assumptions for nitrosyl reactions.

ABSTRACT Biological insecticides can be another pest control method used in integrated pest management; hence there is a demand for scientific information about these products to understand the appropriate application technique. The aim of this study was to evaluate the spray spectra data by different nozzle types using biological insecticide isolated and with adjuvants, as well the surface tension of these spray solutions. For droplet spectra data, a particle size analyzer was used and for surface tension of the spray solution, the method of pendant drop was used. Among the nozzles tested, ADI 11002 provided greater droplets median diameter volume, a lower percentage of droplets with diameters less than 100 μm and also the highest coefficient of uniformity. In general, the addition of adjuvants reduced the median droplet diameter and increased the proportion of drops susceptible to spray drift. By adding adjuvants to the spray solution there was a lower surface tension, which were dependent of the adjuvant chemical group. The Silwet L-77® adjuvant showed the lowest surface tension among the spray solutions evaluated.

In this study, the phytotoxicity of extracts and fractions of stem bark (suber) and mature leaves of Blepharocalyx salicifolius Kuth O. Berg was evaluated on the initial growth of Echinochloa crus- galli L. P. Beauv. (barnyardgrass) and Euphorbia heterophylla L. (wild poinsettia). The extracts were obtained by exhaustive extraction and fractionation by the partition coefficient with organic solvents. Subsequently, the ethyl acetate extracts of bark and mature leaves and the hexane extract of bark were fractionated by column chromatography with solvents in increasing order of polarity. The extracts and fractions were evaluated on weed species at concentrations of 0,2, 0,4 and 0,8 mg.mL-1, The positive control used was the commercial herbicide Sanson® at the same concentrations described and the negative control used was distilled water with DMSO (5 uL/mL). The ethyl acetate extracts of bark and mature leaves and hexane extract of bark showed the most pronounced inhibitory effects on the growth of the target species. Among the eight ethylic acetate leave's fractions, six inhibited the root growth of barnyardgrass at all concentrations tested and four fractions inhibited the root and shoot growth of wild poinsettia, at all concentrations tested. Of the six ethylic acetate bark's fractions, four showed phytotoxicity on root growth of barnyardgrass at all concentrations. The extracts and fractions of bark and mature leaves have given rise to anomalies in the target species. The results demonstrated a pronounced phytotoxic effect of the extracts and fractions of bark and mature leaves, providing subsidies for their use as natural herbicides.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The method currently recommended by the ITU-R for the prediction of rain attenuation in terrestrial line-of sight links considers an equivalent path length over which the rain intensity is assumed to be constant. In other methods, the spatial and temporal variations of the rainfall rate along the path are characterized by an effective rainfall rate that is dependent on the actual path length. Based on experimental measurements, this paper presents a modified effective rainfall rate method that includes the prevailing wind direction during rainy conditions as an additional parameter for the prediction of rain attenuation. The wind direction, which can be obtained from meteorological databases with global coverage, is shown to significantly improve prediction accuracy.
