ABSTRACT Increasing the efficiency of solar dryers with ensuring that the system remains accessible to all users can be achieved with their automation through low-cost and easy-to-use technique sensors. The objective was to develop, implement and evaluate an automatic system for monitoring drying parameters in a hybrid solar-electric dryer (HSED). Initially, an automated data acquisition system for collecting the parameters of sample mass, air temperature, and relative air humidity was developed and installed. The automatic mass data acquisition system was calibrated in the hybrid solar-electric dryer. The automated system was validated by comparing it with conventional devices for measuring the parameters under study. The data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance, Tukey test and linear regression at p ≤ 0.05. The system to turn on/off the exhaust worked efficiently, helping to reduce the errors related to the mass measurement. The GERAR Mobile App showed easy to be used since it has intuitive icons and compatibility with the most used operating systems for mobile devices. The responses in communication via Bluetooth were fast. The use of Arduino, a low-cost microcontroller, to automate the monitoring activity allowed estimating the mass of the product and collecting the drying air temperature and relative air humidity data through the DHT22. This sensor showed a good correlation of mass and air temperature readings between the automatic and conventional system, but low correlation for relative air humidity. In general, the automatic data acquisition system monitored in real time the parameters for drying agricultural products in the HSED.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

This work describes the importance of using renewable sources in experimental classes for undergraduate students, as well as to spread the ideas of using biomass wastes as a source of products of interest. Therefore, in the proposed experiment, citrus fruit peel waste was employed to obtain pure flavonoids by extraction and recristalization. These procedures are important to reveal to students how bioactive products can be easily obtained from natural sources. In this way, naringin and hesperidin could be efficiently extracted from grapefruit (Citrus x. paradisi L.) and common orange (Citrus sinensis L. osbeck) peel wastes, respectively, using simple alcohols as solvents.

ABSTRACT Physalis angulata L. (Solanaceae), popularly known as ‘camapu’, has high pharmacological and agroindustrial potential. However, because it essentially is a wild species, studies on the physiological quality of its seeds are still scarce. In this sense, the objective was to evaluate the physiological performance of P. angulata seeds as a function of pre-germination treatments with chemical promoters. For this, germination, first germination count, germination speed index and seedling emergence tests were performed. The substrate was previously moistened with solutions of gibberellic acid - GA3 (0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06 and 0.08%), potassium nitrate - KNO3 (0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0%) and Stimulate® (0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25 and 1.50%). Each chemical promoter constituted an independent experiment, in a completely randomised design, with four replicates of 25 seeds each. The three chemical promoters enhanced the physiological performance of P. angulata seeds, and the concentrations of 0.05% GA3, 0.4% KNO3 and 1.0% Stimulate® were most suitable.

ABSTRACT Determination of seed physiological maturity allows predicting the most appropriate time for harvest, aiming to obtain seeds with high physiological potential. Physalis angulata (Solanaceae) has pharmacological and agro-industrial potential, but there is little information on its reproductive phenology. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the physiological maturity of P. angulata seeds according to fruit age. Fruits were harvested at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days after anthesis (DAA) and the following evaluations were conducted: fruit weight and diameter, seed moisture content, 100-seed dry weight, 1000-seed weight, electrical conductivity, germination, germination first count, emergence, and seedling dry weight and length. The experimental design was completely randomized. Fruit weight and diameter increased until 35 DAA and seed dry weight increased until 21 DAA. Highest seed physiological potential occurred at 35 DAA, with highest germination percentage (97%). The results allow concluding that P. angulata seeds become physiologically viable from 21 DAA, with highest physiological potential at 35 DAA. However, harvest should be carried out around 28 DAA, before fruits fall.

Sesquiterpene lactones are an important class of secondary metabolites frequently isolated from Vernonanthura genus that present a variety of biological properties, including antiproliferative activity. Due to the limitation of pharmacological studies on Vernonanthura nudiflora, the aim of this work was to investigate their antioxidant potential and antiproliferative activity against human tumor cells, as well as to isolate and identify the chemical constituents present in their aerial parts. The phytochemical investigation resulted in the isolation of the sesquiterpene lactones piptocarphins A, B, D, and a new hirsutinolide derivative, 8α-tigloyloxy-10α-hydroxy-hirsutinolide, besides triterpenes, glycosylated steroids, flavonoids, and one chlorogenic acid derivative. Also, other sesquiterpene lactones were identified by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS/MS) from dichloromethane fraction. This fraction showed activity against the tumor cells tested, mainly against leukemia, glioma, ovarian and kidney, with growth inhibitory activity (GI50) less than 0.80 µg mL-1. Piptocarphins A and B, in mixture, showed strong activity against all human cancer cell lines tested, with GI50 values ≤ 0.15 µg mL-1. Piptocarphin D was selective for glioma and resistant ovarian cell lines. The new hirsutinolide derivative showed potent activity against breast (GI50= 0.96 µg mL-1) and resistant ovarian (GI50 = 3.60 µg mL-1) cell lines.

Abstract Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that reaches half of the world population and it’s recognized as the main cause of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer. In this study, we evaluated the anti-H. pylori, antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities of the methanolic (MeOH) extract of Eugenia uniflora leaves and chemical profile. Anti-H. pylori activity was evaluated by spectrophotometric broth microdilution technique by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), in addition to the evaluation of the effect on the urease enzyme. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by capturing O2 •-, HOCl e NO• radicals. The immunomodulatory effect was evaluated on the cytokines TNF-α, IL-6 and on nitric oxide through inhibition in LPS-stimulated macrophages. The chemical profile was performed by total phenolic, tannin and flavonoid contents and mass spectrometry analysis by ESI-FT-ICR MS. In the anti-H. pylori assay the extract showed MIC of 128 μg/mL, however it did not obtain MBC. The extract also showed ability to inhibit the urease enzyme about 20%. The antioxidant activity of the MeOH extract showed EC50 values of 29.77 µg/mL, 15.71 µg/mL and 442.10 µg/mL to O2 •-, HOCl and NO•, respectively. The extract also showed influence on the release of TNF-α, IL-6 and NO in LPS-stimulated macrophages, ranging from 39% to 97% inhibition. Flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, tannins, triterpenoids and carbohydrates were the major classes of compounds present in the MeOH extract as identified by (-)-ESI-FT-ICR MS. The results indicate important anti-H. pylori, antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities from Eugenia uniflora highlighting its importance in the prevention and treatment of diseases caused by H. pylori infection.

ABSTRACT: In order to improve nutritional and functional quality, chicken burgers were made with different amounts of chia seed (0, 2, 4 and 8%) as pork fat replacers and evaluated for the microbiological, technological and sensorial characteristics. The proximate composition and the microbiological characteristics of raw burgers were in accordance with Brazilian legislation. Higher additions of chia increased the amount of dietary fiber (up to 1.46%) and carbohydrate in the products and reduced the fat content by up to 29%. The addition of chia seed reduced the a* values and increased the h* values of the raw burgers and reduced the tenderness and degree of lipid oxidation in the cooked burgers. Lower sensory taste scores and overall acceptance were conferred on products with higher chia addition; although, the degree of acceptance of the products was high. Results of this study highlighted the potential use of chia seed in the elaboration of low fat and enriched dietary fiber burgers.

Abstract The current study aimed to determine the functional propriety of fresh beets under different cooking methods through the quantification of bioactives compounds. Beets were chosen for uniformity of size, color and absence of defects. They were thoroughly washed in running water to remove dirt, manually peeled with a knife, sliced through a stainless-steel food processor (5 mm slicing disc) and submitted to four different cooking methods: steaming, pressure, oven-baked and hot-water immersion. Analysis were performed in both uncooked and cooked beets to evaluate antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, carotenoids, flavonoids and betalains. The experiment was completely randomized design (CRD). Data were subjected to analysis of variance (F test) and means were compared by Tukey test (p < 0.05). Oven-baked beets preserve most of the bioactive coumpouds, maintaining better levels of carotenoids, flavonoids, betacyanin and betaxanthin than the other cooking methods. The antioxidant activity was similar between the treatments, except in the pressure. Moreover, different cooking methods did not affect phenolic compounds concentration in beets.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Leptospirosis is an important health concern in Brazil. Currently, information on the epidemiology of the disease in the rural areas of the country is lacking. METHODS: Serological and molecular techniques were used to characterize a clinical isolate of Leptospira. RESULTS: The strain CLEP 00060, isolated from a 59-year-old man in a rural area of Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, was identified as belonging to L. kirschneri serogroup Pomona serovar Mozdok. CONCLUSIONS: This study contributes to the local epidemiological knowledge of leptospirosis, prevention of the disease by vaccines, and improvements in its diagnosis.

ABSTRACT Laboratory diagnosis of human leptospirosis usually relies on indirect methods exploring specific immune response. Isolation and identification of the involved strains are cumbersome, but can provide biological resources for pathogenic studies and relevant information for guiding prevention and control measures. The aim of the research we are hereby reporting was the characterization of Leptospira isolates obtained from humans and the environment in Uruguay. Blood cultures were performed from early samples of 302 Uruguayan patients, mainly rural workers, and from 36 water samples taken from their living or working environments. Eight human isolates and seven environmental isolates were obtained and analyzed by end point Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Multilocus Variable Number of Tandem Repeat Analysis (MLVA) and other molecular methods. Human isolates corresponded to several serogroups and serovars of Leptospira interrogans and Leptospira kirschneri species, probably reflecting the infection with similar involved Leptospira species and serovars of an extended animal reservoir in rural settings of the country, mostly dedicated to meat and dairy production. Culture-positive patients were older than usually affected workers, and presented signs and symptoms of severe illness. A high organic and circulating bacterial burden may explain an easier positive result from these workers’ samples. Environmental isolates were mainly identified as Leptospira biflexa strains, with a single L. meyeri isolate of uncertain significance.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Aqueous Extract from Peanut (EAA) in weight, serum biochemistry and liver histology of Wistar rats with normal hearing and a high fat diet. The survey was conducted using 40 male Wistar rats divided into four groups (n=0): GA (high fat diet), GB (fat diet+EAA), GC (normolipídica diet), and GD (normolipídica diet+EAA). After 8 weeks, the rats were euthanized and blood samples were collected to evaluate biochemical data (total cholesterol and its fractions, triglycerides, urea, creatinine, AST, ALT and glucose) and liver fragments for histological analysis. The animals of the GB group had a lower weight gain when compared with GA (XGB versus XGA= p<0.05), but CG and GD did not obtain statistical differences. The rats that received EAA had a reduction in cholesterol levels (XGB= versus XGA= p<0.05 vs. XGA and XGD= p<0.01), triglycerides (=XGB versus XGA and =XGD versus XGA= p<0,001) and more discreetly ALT levels. Blood glucose, urea and creatine remained within the reference values. Liver samples analyzed, the rats of different groups showed no histopathological changes. In conclusion, the EAA had preventive effects on weight gain and dyslipidemia.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Infiltration is a process by which water penetrates through the soil by its surface, and its dynamics can be influenced by several factors, among them, the soil management system adopted. The objective of this work was to estimate water infiltration rate and soil organic matter content in maize and forage intercropping systems. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three replications. Five treatments under no-tillage management were evaluated: 1) Corn (Zea mays L. ), 2) Brachiaria humidicola (Brachiaria humidicola), 3) Corn and Brachiaria humidicola intercropping, 4) Aruana grass (Panicum maximum cv. Aruana), 5) Corn and Aruana grass intercropping. The double ring infiltrometer method was used to determine the basic infiltration rate (VIB). Soil physical properties and soil organic matter were evaluated and correlated with VIB values. Results revealed high VIB values for no-tillage. The highest VIB values were observed in the corn treatment. VIB values decreased with the inclusion of forages. All cultivation systems showed a decrease of organic matter with depth.
