ABSTRACT. Multi-trait multi-environment (MTME) models were fitted to eucalyptus breeding trials data to assess residual variance structure, genetic stability and adaptability. To do so, 215 eucalyptus clones were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with 30 replicates and one plant per plot in four environments. At 36 months of age, tree diameter at breast height (DBH) and pilodyn penetration (PP) were measured. Two MTME models were fitted, for which residuals were considered homoscedastic and heteroscedastic, with the best MTME model selected using Bayesian information criterion. The harmonic mean of the relative performance of the genotypic values (HMRPGV) was used to determine stability and adaptability. Of the two models, the heteroscedastic MTME model had better fit and provided greater accuracy. In addition, genotype-by-environment interaction was complex, and there was low genetic correlation between DBH and PP. Rank correlation between the clones selected by the MTME models was high for DBH but low for PP. The HMRPGV facilitated clone selection through simultaneous evaluation of stability, adaptability, and productivity. Thus, our results suggest that heteroscedastic MTME model / HMRPGV can be efficiently applied in the genetic evaluation and selection of eucalyptus clones.

RESUMO A busca por biomassas para uso como fontes alternativas de fibras, semelhantes a biomassa de Eucalyptus spp., possui grande valor e potencial para aplicação em escala comercial. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar os clones híbridos de Corymbia spp. desenvolvidos pela Aperam BioEnergia como potenciais substitutos da madeira de eucalipto na indústria de polpa celulósica. Ao realizar a polpação kraft modificada e análises de caracterização química, foi possível comparar a biomassa de Eucalyptus spp. com a de Corymbia spp. As comparações foram feitas analisando o incremento médio anual de celulose (IMACel) e consumo específico de madeira (CEMad), estimados usando um número kappa de 19 ± 1. Os resultados mostraram que um dos clones híbridos (Corymbia citriodora × Corymbia torelliana - ID 4) apresentou maior densidade básica, maior rendimento depurado, melhor IMACel#k19 e menor CEMad do que as outras amostras. O clone ID 4 demonstrou menor valor de CEMad pois, simultaneamente, apresentou maior valor de densidade básica e rendimento depurado. Consequentemente, de acordo com seus melhores resultados, o clone ID 4 obteve a pontuação mais alta, calculada pela razão IMACEL/CEMad. Este material genético também apresentou um dos menores teores de lignina total, resultando em um maior rendimento depurado. Além disso, o clone ID 4 apresentou teor de xilana significativamente maior dentre as amostras de madeira avaliadas neste trabalho. Dessa forma, o ID 4, foi o mais bem classificado, provando ser uma excelente alternativa de alto desempenho para parâmetros de interface floresta-indústria

ABSTRACT The search for novel biomasses for uses as alternative fiber sources, similar to Eucalyptus spp. biomass, holds great value and potential for commercial-scale application. This study aims to present the hybrid clones of Corymbia spp. developed by Aperam BioEnergia as potential substitutes for Eucalyptus wood in the market pulp industry. By performing modified kraft pulping and chemical characterization analyses, it was possible to compare the biomass of Eucalyptus spp. with that of Corymbia spp. Comparisons were made by analyzing their respective pulp average growth rate (PAGR) and specific wood consumption (SWC), estimated using a kappa number of 19 ± 1. The results showed that one of the hybrid clones (Corymbia citriodora × Corymbia torelliana - ID 4) had highest PAGR#k19, and lowest SWC than other samples. Clone ID 4 showed lowest value of SWC since, simultaneously presented a higher value of wood basic density and screened yield. Consequently, in agreement with its best results, clone ID 4 had the highest-ranking score, calculated as the PAGR/SWC ratio. This genetic material also showed one of the lowest total lignin content, consequently the highest screening yield. Besides Clone ID 4 showed significantly highest xylan content, among wood samples assessed in this work. For that reason, the ID 4 was the highest-ranked, proving to be an excellent high-performance alternative for forest-industry interface parameters.

RESUMO A técnica de enxertia de topo pode possibilitar o florescimento precoce e, consequentemente, acelerar a autopolinização no melhoramento de Eucalyptus, reduzindo o período de cada geração. O objetivo deste estudo é estabelecer uma metodologia para enxertia de topo, aplicando o regulador de crescimento paclobutrazol em genótipos de Eucalyptus autopolinizados, para induzir o florescimento precoce e acelerar estratégias que envolvam a produção de linhagens. Foram realizados 448 enxertos de topo de sete genótipos (três híbridos de Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus grandis, um de Eucalyptus urophylla e três de Eucalyptus grandis) em dois períodos do ano: julho e outubro. As amostras de enxertia de topo foram avaliadas quanto à indução floral e o desenvolvimento do enxerto em intervalos de três meses. Foi realizado um teste t com nível de significância de 5% para o erro tipo I para comparar a relevância da aplicação de paclobutrazol e um modelo fixo também foi usado para analisar a significância entre os tratamentos. A floração mais rápida foi observada após três meses de aplicação da metodologia de enxertia. Após dois anos, as enxertias de topo realizadas em outubro apresentaram maior produção de botões florais e frutos. A enxertia de topo afetou a indução de flores de Eucalyptus autopolinizadas devido a ter produzido botões florais suficientes para realizar o próximo ciclo de autopolinização em alguns genótipos. A eficácia das enxertias de topo autopolinizadas variou com o genótipo utilizado como copa. O paclobutrazol melhorou a floração das amostras de enxerto de topo. A metodologia estabelecida neste trabalho permite acelerar as estratégias de autopolinização em Eucalyptus, que é uma cultura industrial globalmente importante.

ABSTRACT The top grafting technique can make early flowering possible and consequently accelerate self-pollination in Eucalyptus breeding, reducing the period of each generation. This study aims to establish a methodology to top graft by applying the growth regulator paclobutrazol in self-pollinated Eucalyptus genotypes to induce early flowering and accelerate inbred line strategies. A total of 448 top grafts of seven genotypes (three Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus grandis hybrids, one Eucalyptus urophylla, and three Eucalyptus grandis) were performed in two periods of the year: July and October. The top grafting samples were evaluated concerning flower induction and graft development at three-month intervals. A t-test was performed with a 5% significance level for type I error to compare the relevance of paclobutrazol application. A fixed model was also used to analyze the significance of the treatments. The fastest blooming occurred after three months of applying the graft methodology. After two years, the top graftings performed in October presented higher flower bud and fruit production. The top grafting affected the induction of self-pollinated Eucalyptus flowers with enough flower buds produced to follow the next cycle of self-pollination in some genotypes. The effectiveness of self-pollinated top graftings varied with the genotype used as the scion. The paclobutrazol improved the flowering of the top grafting samples. The methodology established in this work allows accelerating self-pollination strategies in the globally important industrial crop Eucalyptus.

ABSTRACT Forest plantations are strong allies in preserving natural resources, providing social and economic benefits. The plantations carried out in the coming years will be vital to meet the growing demand for forest products. To ensure the continuity of genetic progress and the good results achieved with the improvement of forest species, statistical methods that accurately selects superior genotypes are desirable. Multi-trait multi-environment trials are preferred over single-trait single-environment trials, since they can exploit the covariance between traits and environments, increasing the analysis’s prediction power. The Bayesian multi-trait multi-environments approach (BMTME) combines the cited advantages with the parsimony of Bayesian statistics promoting a more informative data analysis. Thus, the aims of this study were to estimate genetic parameters, evaluate genetic variability, and select eucalyptus clones through BMTME models. To this end, a data set with 215 eucalyptus clones evaluated in four environments for diameter at breast height and Pilodyn penetration was used. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm was applied to estimate the variance components and genetic parameters and to predict the genotypic values. The Smith-Hazel index was used to simultaneously achieve gains with selection for both traits. The BMTME approach provided high accuracies, being a good strategy to the evaluation of multiple environmental trials of Eucalyptus for breeding purposes.

ABSTRACT An accurate, efficient and informative statistical method for analyses of genotype × environment (G × E) interactions is a key requirement for progress in any breeding program. Thus, the objective of this study was to quantify individual variation in reaction norms using random regression models fitted through Legendre polynomials in eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) breeding. To this end, a data set with 215 eucalyptus clones of different species and hybrids evaluated in four environments for diameter at breast height (DBH) and Pilodyn penetration (PP) was used. Variance components were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood, and genetic values were predicted by best linear unbiased prediction. The best-fitted model for DBH and PP was indicated by the Akaike information criterion, and the significance of the genotype effects was tested using the likelihood ratio test. Genetic variability between eucalyptus clones and very high accuracies ( r g ^ g ≥ 0 . 90) were detected for both traits. Reaction norms and eigenfunctions generated genetic insights into G × E interactions. This is the first study that quantified individual variation in reaction norms using random regression models fitted through Legendre polynomials in eucalyptus breeding and demonstrated the great potential of this technique.

RESUMO: O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar o crescimento de espécies de Eucalyptus e Corymbia em diferentes intensidades de hipergravidade simulada em relação ao controle. Uma centrífuga foi usada para simular a hipergravidade. Este equipamento foi desenvolvido e construído no Centro de Microgravidade da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Sementes de cinco espécies de Eucalyptus e uma de Corymbia (E. grandis, E. globulus, E. benthamii, E. saligna, E. dunnii, e C. maculata) foram colocadas em papeis de germinação e em recipientes plásticos, em que foram rotacionadas a velocidades simuladas de 5 Gz e 7 Gz, por diferentes períodos de tempo. A tecnologia da hipergravidade proporcionou aumento significativo na taxa de crescimento das plântulas (diâmetro, altura e sobrevivência aos 120 dias) no viveiro. Para Eucalyptus globulus, os efeitos da hipergravidade foram significativos na intensidade de 7 Gz em qualquer período de tempo (do primeiro até o nono dia). Os efeitos da hipergravidade foram significativos para as espécies E. benthamii e E. grandis na intensidade 7 Gz e 8 horas de exposição. Dessa maneira, a hipergravidade simulada apresenta potencial de uso em testes com plântulas de eucaliptos em estágios iniciais de desenvolvimento.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth responses of various Eucalyptus and Corymbia species subjected to different intensities of simulated hypergravity relative to the control. A centrifuge was used to simulate hypergravity. It was developed and built at the Centro de Microgravidade of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Seeds of five Eucalyptus and one Corymbia species (E. grandis, Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus benthamii, Eucalyptus saligna, Eucalyptus dunnii, and C. maculata) were placed on moist germination paper in plastic containers and rotated at speeds simulating 5 Gz and 7 Gz for different lengths of time. Hypergravity technology significantly increased seedling production (diameter, height, and survival at 120 days) in nurseries. In E. globulus, the effects of hypergravity were significant at 7 Gz at all lengths of time (from 1 d to 9 days). Effects of hypergravity were significant in both E. benthamii and E. grandis at 7 Gz and 8 h exposure. Therefore, simulated hypergravity could be used in performance tests of Eucalyptus seedlings in early stages of development.

Abstract The present study aimed to evaluate the selection indices efficiency for Pilodyn penetration combined with growth traits in Eucalyptus clones. It was carried out experiments in a randomized block design, with single tree plots and 30 replications. Diameter at breast height (DBH), total height (TH), and Pilodyn penetration as an indicator of basic density (BD) were measured. The volume was estimated. Based on predicted genotypic values, three indices presented the highest accuracies: I8 (based on partial correlation), I7 (based on the concept of multivariate BLUP) and I3 (based on two variables as ratio, which uses a third heritability estimate associated to the ratio DBH/BD, besides the two heritabilities of DBH and BD). Thus, it is possible to optimize the selection by combining properly the variables using their genetic control, precision and the relationships between them. The best options came from using only two no redundant traits DBH and BD.

RESUMO O presente trabalho objetivou estudar o controle genético e a interação genótipos por ambientes do peso de madeira de clones de Eucalyptus em quatro ambientes do estado do Rio Grande do Sul. No ano de 2007, foi implantada uma rede de testes clonais com 864 clones de Eucalyptus. Aos três anos de idade, foram mensurados o diâmetro a altura do peito, a altura total das árvores e a profundidade de penetração do Pilodyn, para determinação indireta da densidade básica da madeira. O incremento médio anual em peso seco (IMApeso) foi calculado. Herdabilidades individuais de 0,148 para IMApeso e 0,48 para profundidade de penetração do Pilodyn foram constatadas. A correlação genética entre os ambientes variou de 0,503 a 0,926 para as características avaliadas. A interação genótipo x ambiente foi significativa para IMApeso (0,533). A partir da análise de interação dos ambientes, 3 zonas de melhoramento foram definidas para o caráter IMApeso. A junção do caráter densidade básica e volume para a criação de um índice de peso de madeira foi fundamental para exercer uma seleção mais acurada, visto que houve mudança de 37% no ordenamento dos clones para o caráter volume. A seleção simultânea por estabilidade e adaptabilidade proporcionou ganhos superiores, em relação à testemunha comercial, quando comparada à seleção com base nos valores genotípicos preditos. Dessa forma, os 5 clones superiores foram selecionados com base nesses critérios: 39912 (E. urophylla), 39659 (E. urophylla), 6808 (E. grandis), 36190 (E. saligna), 39407 (E. grandis x E. urophylla).

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate the genetic control and genotype-by-environment interaction in wood weight of Eucalyptus clones in four environments located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, aiming to select superior genotypes. In 2007, a network of clonal tests was established with 864 clones of Eucalyptus. At three years of age, diameter at breast height and total height were measured, as was depth of Pilodyn penetration, for indirect inference of wood basic density. The mean annual increment of dry weight (MAIweight) was calculated. Individual heritability of 0.148 and of 0.48 was found for MAIweight and Pilodyn penetration depth, respectively. The genetic correlation between environments ranged from 0.503 to 0.926 for all traits. The genotype-by-environment interaction was significant for the MAIweight index (0.533). From the environment interaction analysis, 3 "improvement areas" were defined for the trait MAIweight. The grouping of the traits wood density and volume to create a wood weight index was essential for a more accurate selection, since there was a change of 37% compared to the ranking of clones for volume. The simultaneous selection for stability and adaptability provided higher gains when compared to selection based on predicted genotypic values between environments. Moreover, MHPRVG allowed an increase in gains compared to the control. Thus, the five best clones were selected based on these criteria: 39912 (E. urophylla), 39659 (E. urophylla), 6808 (E. grandis), 36190 (E. saligna), 39407 (E. grandis x E. urophylla).

RESUMO: Em povoamentos florestais de eucalipto, é importante determinar o número de plantas a serem avaliadas para que as inferências sobre o crescimento das plantas sejam confiáveis. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o tamanho de amostra (número de plantas) necessário para a estimação da média do diâmetro do tronco e da altura de planta de híbridos interespecíficos de eucalipto. Em 6.694 plantas de doze híbridos interespecíficos de eucalipto, foram mensurados os diâmetros do tronco à altura do peito aos três (DAP3) e aos sete anos (DAP7) e a altura de planta aos sete anos de idade (H7). Após, foram calculadas as estatísticas: mínimo, máximo, média, variância, desvio-padrão, erro-padrão e coeficiente de variação. A seguir, testaram-se as hipóteses de homogeneidade entre as variâncias. Depois, foi determinado o tamanho de amostra por meio de reamostragem, com reposição de 10.000 reamostras. Há aumento do tamanho de amostra para a estimação da média do DAP3, da H7 e do DAP7, nessa ordem. Para a estimação da média do DAP3, do DAP7 e da H7 dos híbridos interespecíficos de eucalipto, com amplitude do intervalo de confiança de 95% igual a 20% da estimativa da média, 16, 59 e 31 plantas, respectivamente, são suficientes.

ABSTRACT: In eucalyptus crops, it is important to determine the number of plants that need to be evaluated for a reliable inference of growth. The aim of this study was to determine the sample size needed to estimate average trunk diameter at breast height and plant height of inter-specific eucalyptus hybrids. In 6,694 plants of twelve inter-specific hybrids it was evaluated trunk diameter at breast height at three (DBH3) and seven years (DBH7) and tree height at seven years (H7) of age. The statistics: minimum, maximum, mean, variance, standard deviation, standard error, and coefficient of variation were calculated. The hypothesis of variance homogeneity was tested. The sample size was determined by re sampling with replacement of 10,000 re samples. There was an increase in the sample size from DBH3 to H7 and DBH7. A sample size of 16, 59 and 31 plants is adequate to estimate DBH3, DBH7 and H7 means, respectively, of inter-specific hybrids of eucalyptus, with amplitude of confidence interval of 95% equal to 20% of the estimated mean.

Este trabalho objetivou estudar a interação genótipos em ambientes de clones de Eucalyptus em quatro ambientes do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Os ensaios foram conduzidos nas áreas da empresa CMPC Celulose Riograndense, nos Municípios de Minas do Leão (Horto Florestal Cambará), Encruzilhada do Sul (Horto Florestal Capivara), Dom Feliciano (Horto Florestal Fortaleza) e Vila Nova do Sul (Horto Florestal São João). No ano 2007, foi implantada uma rede de testes clonais com 864 clones de Eucalyptus, pertencentes a 37 espécies e híbridos. Aos 3 anos de idade, foram mensurados o diâmetro à altura do peito (dap) e a altura total (Ht) das árvores dos experimentos. O incremento médio anual (IMA) foi calculado de acordo com o volume individual por clone e o estande de plantas por hectare na idade de avaliação do teste clonal. Os resultados da correlação genotípica entre os ambientes variaram de 0,39 a 0,56, demonstrando que ocorreu interação genótipos x ambientes significativa dos caracteres avaliados. Esses resultados indicam que é necessário selecionar clones específicos, nas combinações de ambientes com baixa correlação genética entre si. Ocorreu baixa correção genética entre os ambientes Cambará x Capivara; Cambará x São João; Capivara x Fortaleza; Capivara x São João; e Fortaleza x São João. Dessa maneira, para este estudo foram necessárias três unidades de manejo para minimizar os efeitos da interação genótipos x ambientes. Incluindo a seleção por estabilidade, adaptabilidade e os dois atributos simultaneamente, ocorreu mudança de clones e de posição entre os clones no ordenamento de seleção. Com a seleção simultânea por estabilidade e adaptabilidade (MHPRVG), os ganhos aumentaram em comparação com a seleção pelos valores genotípicos preditos entre os ambientes, principalmente, e houve incremento dos ganhos em relação à testemunha comercial. Por exemplo, os cinco melhores clones pelo critério MHPRVG apresentaram-se 56% superiores à testemunha comercial para a característica produtividade em volume.

The present study aimed to study the genotypes interaction in environments of Eucalyptus clones, in four environments in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The tests were conducted in the areas of company CMPC Celulose Riograndense, in the municipalities of Minas do Leão (farm Cambará), Encruzilhada do Sul (farm Capivara), Dom Feliciano (farm Fortaleza) and Vila Nova do Sul (farm São João). In 2007, a network of clonal tests was implanted with 864 clones of Eucalyptus, belonging to 37 different species and hybrids. At three years of age, we measured the diameter at breast height (dbh) and total height (Ht) of the trees of the experiments. The mean annual increment (MAI) was calculated according to the individual volume per clone and plant stand in hectare at age of evaluation of clonal test. The results for the genotypic correlations among environments ranged from 0.39 to 0.56, showing that there was significant genotype x environment interaction for all the evaluated characteristics. These results indicate that it is necessary to select specific clones for combinations of environments with low genetic correlation between them. Low genetic correlation occurred between cambará x capivara; cambará x são joão; capivara x fortaleza; capivara x são joão; and fortaleza x são joão. Thus, for this study three management units were necessary to minimize the effects of genotypes x environments interaction. Including selection for stability, adaptability, and both attributes simultaneously, there was a change between clones and the position of the clones in the order of selection. With the simultaneous selection for stability and adaptability (MHPRVG), the gains increased compared to the selection for predicted genotypic values among environments, especially; and there was an increase in gains compared to the commercial control. For example, the five best clones according to the criterion MHPRVG are 56% higher than the commercial control for the characteristic productivity in volume.

A técnica de miniestaquia permitiu o estabelecimento de florestas clonais em larga escala. Porém, pouco se avançou no seu manejo em viveiro para genótipos recalcitrantes. Assim, esse estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a influência do sistema de cortes na base de miniestacas na produção de mudas de um clone híbrido de Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus globulus subsp. maidenii. Desta forma, foram realizadas três avaliações: 1) sobrevivência aos 30 dias em casa de vegetação; 2) enraizamento aos 45 dias em casa de sombra; e 3) aproveitamento final aos 60 dias na área de rustificação. O índice de enraizamento foi determinado com base no percentual de sobrevivência. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados constituído de três tratamentos: 1) miniestacas com corte na base perpendicular (testemunha); 2) miniestacas com corte na base em bisel (corte diagonal) e 3) miniestacas cortadas perpendicularmente, com três incisões longitudinais na base. Foram avaliadas quatro blocos de 228 plantas por bloco. Os resultados de enraizamento foram superiores a 80% nos melhores tratamentos e indicam que a propagação do clone via miniestaquia é viável, não apresentando comportamento recalcitrante. Os sistemas de corte basal das miniestaca em bisel e as incisões não favoreceram a formação de raízes.

Mini-cutting technique has allowed establishing large scale clonal forests. However small progress has been observed in nursery management practices for recalcitrant genotypes. The present work aimed to evaluate the influence of different base cut systems in mini-cuttings for seedlings production of a hybrid clone of Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus globulus subsp. maidenii. Three evaluations were performed: 1) survival in the greenhouse at the 30th day; 2) number of rooted seedlings in the shade house at the 45th day; and 3) viable seedlings in the hardening area at the 60th day. Rooting evaluation was based on survival rate. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with four replications and three treatments: 1) perpendicular cut at the base of mini-cuttings (control); 2) bevel cut at the base of mini-cuttings (diagonal cut); 3) perpendicular cut at the base of mini-cuttings with three longitudinal incisions in the base. Four blocks were assessed, each block was composed by 228 plants. The results of rooting were over 80% in the best treatments, indicating that the clone propagation is feasible using mini-cutting technique, and it does not show a recalcitrant behavior. The basal cut system in bevel and in longitudinal incisions did not favor rooting.

Apesar do progresso da silvicultura clonal alcançado por meio da técnica de miniestaquia, pouco se avançou em relação às espécies recalcitrantes, sobretudo com relação ao manejo empregado em miniestacas. Com o objetivo de avaliar a influência da arquitetura de miniestacas na produção de mudas de quatro clones de Eucalyptus, foram realizadas avaliações nas três fases de produção de mudas: 1) Sobrevivência aos 30 dias em casa de vegetação, 2) Enraizamento aos 45 dias em casa de sombra; e 3) Aproveitamento final aos 60 dias na área de rustificação. A taxa de enraizamento foi determinada com base na taxa de sobrevivência aos 30 dias. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados com arranjo de tratamento em esquema fatorial 3 x 4, sendo três tipos de arquitetura de miniestaca: 1) folha inteira (100%); 2) folha cortada (50%); e 3) miniestaca cortada em "árvore de natal" (folhas subapicais cortadas em ¾ e basais inteiras) e quatro clones de (Eucalyptus E. dunnii , E. saligna e dois de E. urophylla x E. globulus), com quatro repetições e 100 plantas por bloco. De acordo com os resultados, a produção de mudas foi afetada pelo tipo de arquitetura de miniestacas. A arquitetura que apresentou os melhores resultados nas avaliações foi "árvore de natal" e folha inteira.

Despite the advances on minicutting techniques for clonal silviculture, little progress has been made considering recalcitrant species, especially for the handling in minicuttings practices. The objective was to evaluate the influence of the architecture of minicuttings in the production of four clones of Eucalyptus seedlings. Evaluations in the three phases of seedlings production were performed: 1) Survival at 30 days in the greenhouse; 2) Rooting at 45 days in the shade house; and 3) Final exploitation at 60 days in the rustication area. The rooting rates was calculated based on the surviving rates at 30 days. The experimental design was randomized blocks with treatment in a factorial scheme 3 x 4, with three types of minicutting architecture: 1) whole leaf (100%); 2) cut leaf (50%); and 3) minicutting in the form of a "christmas tree" (sub apical leaves cut in ¾ and basal leaves left uncut) and four clones of Eucalyptus (E. dunnii, E. saligna), and two clones of E. urophylla x E. globulus. We used 100 plants per block with four replications. The results have shown that the production of seedlings was affected by the type of architecture adopted in the minicuttings. The architecture that showed the best results in the evaluations were "christmas tree" and whole leaf.

Neste trabalho, objetivou-se estudar a adaptabilidade de híbridos multiespécies de Eucalyptus em quatro ambientes do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Os ensaios foram realizados nas áreas da empresa CMPC Celulose Riograndense, nos Municípios de Minas do Leão (Horto Florestal Cambará), Encruzilhada do Sul (Horto Florestal Capivara), Dom Feliciano (Horto Florestal Fortaleza) e Vila Nova do Sul (Horto Florestal São João). No ano 2007 foi implantada uma rede de testes clonais com 146 clones de Eucalyptus, pertencentes a 34 diferentes espécies e, ou híbridos, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso com 30 repetições e uma planta por parcela (Single Tree Plot). Aos 3 anos de idade, foram mensurados o diâmetro à altura do peito (dap) e a altura total (Ht) das árvores dos experimentos. O incremento médio anual (IMA) foi calculado de acordo com o volume individual por clone e o estande de plantas no hectare na idade de avaliação do teste clonal. Concluiu-se que em um programa de melhoramento do eucalipto a análise simultânea de produtividade, estabilidade e adaptabilidade deve ser preferida em relação ao simples ordenamento de valores genotípicos. Na seleção simultânea, destacaram-se entre os melhores materiais genéticos do ordenamento, híbridos do tipo "three-way cross", formados por três diferentes espécies de Eucalyptus. Os híbridos mais promissores para a geração de clones superiores foram E. urophylla x (E. camaldulensis x E. grandis), E. grandis x (E. urophylla x E. grandis), E. saligna x (E. grandis x E. urophylla) e E. grandis x E. kirtoniana (E. robusta x E. tereticornis) e E. grandis x E. urophylla.

The objective of this study was to investigate the adaptability multi species hybrid of Eucalyptus in four environments in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The tests were conducted in the areas of CMPC Celulose Riograndense in the municipalities of Minas do Leão (Cambará farm), Encruzilhada do Sul (Capivara farm), Dom Feliciano (Fortaleza farm) and Vila Nova do Sul (São João farm). A network of clonal tests was established in 2007with 146 clones of Eucalyptus, belonging to 34 different species and, or hybrids, in a randomized block design with 30 replications in single tree plot). The diameter at breast height (dbh) and total height (Ht) of trees at three years of old were measured. The mean annual increment (MAI) was calculated according to the volume per individual clone and plant stand in hectare at the evaluation age of the clonal test. It was concluded that in a breeding program for Eucalyptus, the simultaneous analysis of productivity, stability and adaptability should be done rather than the simple ordering of genotypic values. "Three-way cross" Hybrid-type made up of three different species of Eucalyptus stood out among the best genetic materials in the simultaneous selection. The most promising hybrids for the generation of higher clones were E. urophylla x (E. camaldulensis x E. grandis), E. grandis x (E. urophylla x E. grandis), E. saligna x (E. grandis x E. urophylla) and E. grandis x E. kirtoniana (E. robusta x E. tereticornis) and E. grandis x E. urophylla.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a variabilidade genética e o desempenho silvicultural de clones de híbridos interespecíficos de Eucalyptus urophylla, E. globulus, E. maidenii, E. saligna, E. grandis, E. pellita, E. resinifera, E. kirtoniana e E. dunnii, e determinar a viabilidade da seleção precoce em selecionar clones superiores. Os diâmetros do tronco à altura do peito aos três (DAP3) e sete (DAP7) anos de idade e a altura total das árvores aos sete anos de idade foram mensurados. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com 138 clones, 10 repetições e seis plantas por parcela. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e agrupados pelo método das k-médias, tendo-se realizado a comparação de médias e determinado a correlação de Pearson (r) entre as variáveis avaliadas. A validação do agrupamento foi realizada por meio de análise de variância e do teste de Tukey. Os clones de híbridos interespecíficos de Eucalyptus apresentaram variabilidade genética. Foram estabelecidos cinco grupos de clones com base no desempenho silvicultural (DAP3, DAP7 e altura). O DAP3 é altamente correlacionado ao DAP7 e à altura aos sete anos de idade. A seleção com base no DAP3 pode ser utilizada para identificar clones superiores de Eucalyptus com grande vigor de crescimento.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic variability and silvicultural performance of clones from interspecific hybrids of Eucalyptus urophylla, E. globulus, E. maidenii, E. saligna, E. grandis, E. pellita, E. resinifera, E. kirtoniana and E. dunnii, and to determine the feasibility of early selection in selecting superior clones. The stem diameter at breast height at three (DAP3) and seven years (DAP7) and the total tree height at seven years were evaluated. A randomized complete block design, with138 clones, ten replicates and six plants per plot was used. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and clustered by the k-means method; the means were compared, and the Pearson correlation (r) was determined between variables. Clustering validation was performed using analysis of variance and Tukey's test. Clones of interspecific Eucalyptus hybrids showed genetic variability. Five groups of clones were established based on their silvicultural performance (DAP3, DAP7 and height). The DAP3 is highly correlated to DAP7 and height at seven years. The selection based on DAP3 can be used to identify superior clones of Eucalyptus with good growth vigor.

Objetivando avaliar a eficiência da seleção inicial de 13 árvores-matriz para clonagem de Eucalyptus grandis e o desempenho delas em teste clonal, foram mensuradas as características dap, altura total (Ht), volume com casca (V CC), sem casca (V SC) e volume de casca (V C), bem como as cinco árvores "co-dominantes" em um raio de 10 m da matriz selecionada, para verificar a sua superioridade em relação aos seus pares. O desempenho silvicultural dos clones dessas matrizes foi avaliado aos sete anos de idade, em teste clonal instalado no delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições e parcela quadrada de 25 plantas, em espaçamento de 3 x 2 m. Com base nos resultados deste trabalho, pode-se concluir que a avaliação da superioridade em Ht da árvore-matriz em relação às árvores co-dominantes do local de seleção é um parâmetro importante para a escolha inicial de árvores-matriz. A análise multivariada foi eficaz para a alocação das matrizes em grupos divergentes, bem como para a classificação de árvores-matriz selecionadas posteriormente dentro dos grupos pré-definidos pelo método de Tocher. Existe relação significativa entre as características utilizadas para a seleção inicial das árvores-matriz e o desempenho dos clones dessas matrizes na avaliação final do teste clonal. Esses resultados possibilitam a redução do número de material genético a ser avaliado. No entanto, a instalação dos testes é imprescindível no processo de seleção, principalmente devido à existência da interação do genótipo com os efeitos ambientais.

Aiming at evaluating the efficiency of initial selection of thirteen donor trees for Eucalyptus grandis cloning and their performance in a clonal test, the characteristics diameter (dap), total height (Ht), volume with bark, (V CC), volume without bark (V SC) and bark volume (V C) were assessed along with five "codominant" trees within a 10 m radius of the selected donor, to evaluate its superiority compared to their pairs. The silvicultural performance of these clones was evaluated at seven years of age in a clonal test arranged in randomized block design with three repetitions and a square plot of 25 plants, in a 3 X 2 spacing. Results showed that the superior Ht of donor tree compared to the "co-dominant" trees of the selection site is an important parameter for the initial selection of donor tress. Multivariate analyzes was efficient for placing donor plants in divergent groups, as well as for the classification of donor trees selected afterwards, within the groups defined by the Tocher method. There is a significant relationship among the characteristics used for the initial selection of donor trees and the performances of their clones in the final evaluation of the clonal test. These results allow the reduction in the number of genetic material to be evaluated, however, the tests are essential for the selection process, mainly because the genotype-environment interaction effects.
