Abstract Paper aims We investigate the drivers and barriers for the traceability digitalisation of the Australian construction supply chain. Originality There is a growing interest in the construction industry for embracing digital technologies. Nevertheless, the digital transition in construction industry is still slow, especially for addressing material traceability. Research method An exploratory-empirical study was conducted in which we performed the following steps: (i) definition of selection criteria; (ii) semi-structured interviews with 26 experts (academics, practitioners and stakeholders); and (iii) content analysis and propositions. Main findings Results allowed the identification of the most critical drivers and barriers for such traceability digitalisation, being consolidated in a conceptual framework that characterises the early and late adopters of digital technologies in the construction supply chain. Implications for theory and practice In theoretical terms, when considering the barriers/challenges, the degree to which the digital traceability's results are visible to the adopters seems to be an important issue, being able to impair the digitalisation of the construction supply chain. From a practical perspective, the more companies advance in the traceability digitalisation, the more aware they will become regarding its drivers/benefits and barriers/challenges. Nevertheless, some highly critical drivers/benefits and barriers/challenges were equally perceived by both early and late adopters.

Abstract Paper aims This paper addresses difficulties among the Brazilian scholarly community in industrial engineering (IE) when conducting case-based research. It also provides further recommendations to increase methodological rigour. Originality The paper contributes to the practice of case research by providing a historical perspective of research methodology in Brazil and offering guidance to improve case research adoption as well as the methodological rigour. Research method The main challenges when conducting case research were first identified through a literature review. Then, an exploratory survey with Brazilian scholars was conducted to identify challenges perceived by those. Recommendations are then provided, especially regarding the data analysis stage. The recommendations are discussed in the light of the existing literature and based on authors’ experience in conducting qualitative research. Main findings Difficulties when conducting case research identified by scholars can be classified in three ‘Aquila’s hells’: (i) weak theoretical background, (ii) careless case study design/planning; and (iii) fragile/uncertain data analysis. Suggestions to improve the data analysis process consist of building a narrative, data reduction, improving coding, etc. Improving validity is also necessary. Abstract Paper aims This study identifies fundamental characteristics for developing a paper-based thesis (PBT), providing some recommendations to researchers who decide for this academic research report. Originality This paper contributes to the literature by providing guidance to develop PBTs, which has been attracting researchers' interest because it demonstrates publication capacity and potential as a researcher. Additionally, it is still not entirely clear which issues and countermeasures researchers should address when choosing the paper-based structure. Research method The authors searched for articles of PBTs already published, institutional documents (e.g., regulations for conducting PBTs in Brazil and abroad) and journal papers concerning this subject. A content and document analysis were conducted in the papers and PBT internal regulations, respectively. Main findings Results indicate five main factors that impact the success of a PBT approach: (i) the initial planning for this academic model; (ii) alignment between the articles and the thesis/dissertation; (iii) research design construction; (iv) copyrights requirements; and (v) issues regarding co-authorship. Based on that, the study also builds some guidelines to structure a robust PBT. Implications for theory and practice Our recommendations might be meaningful to scholars and researchers bring more theoretical, empirical, and structural robustness when developing a PBT final document.

Abstract Paper aims This study aims at identifying the barriers, opportunities and trends for the strategic development of the Australian manufacturing industry. Originality As research on Australian manufacturing is prolific and sparse, our study helps to clarify whether and how important research findings on Australian manufacturing replicate. Research method For that, we conducted a scoping review on literature evidence published in the last twenty years. We systemically compiled the body of knowledge and proposed research directions in accordance with five global manufacturing megatrends. Main findings We identified eight barriers/challenges and eight opportunities according to manufacturing sectors and analyzed them based on their emphasis on these global megatrends. Literature emphasis has not been equally distributed over time, highlighting the need for further research. Implications for theory and practice We suggested three main directions for future studies; they were: (i) digital transformation of manufacturing; (ii) sustainable operations in end-to-end service-integrated manufacturing; and (iii) interrelation between socioeconomic characteristics and strategic critical success factors. Further, the body of knowledge’s systemic compilation has led to new conceptual and theoretical insights in light of global megatrends.

Abstract Paper aims This research proposes a new facility layout for an Indian textile company based on guidelines for Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) and Lean Manufacturing (LM). Originality This paper provides an original industrial case study with valuable insights for practitioners interested in layout redesign. The obtained results encourage assuming its transferability to similar situations than textile industry. Research method To showcase the application of LM on plant layout design, an ABC Industries’ facility is selected. Information is collected through multiple site visits and semi-structured interviews with the company’s key staff, as well as examination of relevant company documentations. Main findings Some of the expected results include costs reduction handling, organic growth elimination, unnecessary movements reduction and less arrangement adjustments. Implications for theory and practice This paper provides an original industrial case study with valuable insights for the adaptation of the SLP model to reformulate plant designs.

Abstract Paper aims This paper aims to critically review the Lean-based methodologies (e.g. Lean production, Lean Six Sigma, and lean government) in Public Administration to locate the critical success factors (CSFs) for lean public management implementation. Originality It is one of the first systematic literature reviews to explore the CSFs of Lean-based methodologies in the public sector with a strategic focus on the l-government. Research method This research is based on a systematic review of 83 articles that were published on Lean-based methodologies in public sector organizations in well-known academic databases. Main findings There were identified 28 CSFs, grouped by a taxonomy of five significant lean public management categories that deal with the spread of Lean-based methodologies in different public sector environments and can be used to guide continuous improvement (CI) in the public sector. Implications for theory and practice This paper can provide a better panorama to understand the present status of Lean-based methodologies towards public practices, as well as, to bridge the gap of a systematic approach (taxonomy) that could direct CI implementation in the public sector, considering a proper understanding of distinct public management characteristics, which can effectively guide practitioners, facilitating their decision-making.

Abstract Paper aims This article aims to evaluate the impact of Lean Production (LP) practices implementation on the supply chain of a public hospital. Originality Most implementations fall short of their goals because they are done in a fragmented way and not from a system-wide perspective. Our approach allows to anticipate errors of misguided LP implementations in healthcare organizations. Research method The implementation of a set of LP practices in the hospital`s supply chain was assessed by computational simulation modelling, focusing on one of the most financially important product families. Main findings Since the simulation model considers the variability of suppliers and customers as inputs, it allows the verification of the proposed inventory policies effectiveness, in order to avoid affecting the service level. Implications for theory and practice The proposition of a method that integrates value stream mapping into computational simulation modelling brings a differentiated approach to analyze lean implementation in a healthcare supply chain. The simulation model supports a more assertive decision-making process on lean implementation, allowing the organization to ensure that the quality and efficiency of healthcare is not affected.

Abstract Paper aims This article aims at investigating the implementation level of Lean Supply Chain (LSC) practices in hotels’ supply chains. Originality The proposed method allows to characterize LSC implementation in such an unusual context, identifying improvement opportunities and checking for discrepancies in their implementation. Research method Six different supply chains of high-quality hotels were analyzed through semi-structured interviews. Interviewees played key roles in their purchasing departments and presented large experience in the hospitality sector. Main findings Results were consolidated and for each case attributes were assigned to measure the implementation level of ten practices. Implementation scores were compared to a perceived average importance degree in order to verify convergences and divergences between the desired and actual improvement initiatives. Implications for theory and practice The applicability of LSC practices in services still needs further exploration. In the hospitality sector, whose evidence is even scarcer, this study provides a more holistic approach enabling a deeper understanding of the necessary adaptation for a successful implementation.

Abstract Paper aims This article aims at proposing a methodology for assessing lean practices in healthcare organizations that are undergoing a lean implementation. Originality The proposed methodology evaluates healthcare organizations and help managers identify the relationships intensities between their problems and lean practices. This application occurs in a case study in an Emergency Department from a Brazilian public hospital. Research method The proposed methodology provides a theoretical framework that addresses lean practices according to fundamental aspects of the organization, such as people, partnerships, results, processes and leadership, corroborating to a systemic view of lean implementation and facilitating its long-term sustainability. Main findings Our findings provide guidelines for the public hospital leadership, allowing a clear focus on the improvement efforts that can mitigate problems. Implications for theory and practice Due to contextual diversity, the understanding of the critical success factors for lean implementation under such conditions deserves attention. Hence, the proposed method allows practitioners and academics to better comprehend the lean implementation within healthcare organizations. Such enhanced comprehension allows to anticipate potential issues throughout the lean implementation, entailing more assertive efforts. Moreover, accounting for specific problems when designing the lean implementation avoids the utilization of a general and ineffective approach.

Resumo O baixo índice de sucesso e as mudanças estruturais e organizacionais necessárias para a Implantação da Produção Enxuta (IPE) indicam a necessidade do uso da abordagem de Gestão de Riscos (GR) para gerenciar esta transformação. Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar um modelo gráfico para explicitar as relações entre os riscos na IPE por meio da utilização da Interpretative Structural Modelling em uma empresa e entender os motivos destas relações. O estudo está baseado em um caso conduzido na unidade de uma empresa global fabricante de componentes hidráulicos. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de múltiplas fontes de evidência, como entrevistas, observações, visitas à fábrica e análise de documentos. O modelo desenvolvido propiciou o esclarecimento e entendimento dos efeitos diretos e indiretos da presença dos riscos na IPE na empresa. As principais relações identificadas no modelo foram confirmadas por meio das explicações dos motivos pelos quais tais relações ocorriam no caso.

Abstract The low success rate and the complex structural and organizational changes required for lean production implementation (LPI) require the use of the risk management approach to manage this transformation. This paper aims to present a graphical model to explain the relationships between the risks in LPI through interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and to understand the reasons behind such relationships. The case study was conducted in a factory of a global company that manufactures hydraulic components. Data were collected from multiple sources, including interviews, observations, visits to the plant, and document analysis. The research contributed to clarifying and understanding the direct and indirect influences of risks that hinder the LPI at the plant. The main relationships identified in the model were confirmed by explanations of reasons for such relationships occurred in the case.

Resumen El uso de prácticas socio-técnicas se menciona como un indicador de satisfacción de los colaboradores dentro de la organización. Este artículo tiene como propósito identificar el efecto moderador de la aplicación de prácticas just-in-time sobre la relación entre las prácticas socio-técnicas y el desempeño de calidad de salud de los colaboradores en empresas con implementación Lean. Se desarrolló una investigación con 144 empresas del sur de Brasil en proceso de implementación Lean. Los resultados indican que las prácticas socio-técnicas presentan relación significativa con el desempeño de la empresa en calidad y salud de los colaboradores, y la implementación de prácticas just-in-time no perjudica el desempeño de estos indicadores en las empresas. Abstract The use of Socio-technical practices theory is mentioned as a satisfaction indicator of the work force within an organization. The purpose of this article is to identify the moderating effect at applying just-in-time practices on the relationship between socio-technical practices and the performance of the employees' health quality in such companies. We carried out a survey with 144 different companies from Southern Brazil that are undergoing a lean implementation. Results indicate that Socio-technical practices have a positive significant relationship with such performance, and the concurrent adoption of just-in-time does not undermine quality and workers' health in the companies. Resumen La solidificación del licor es uno de los pasos más importantes para el procesamiento de los cultivares de cacao. Este proceso se caracteriza como un proceso continuo, que puede convertirse en un obstáculo para la aleatorización de los tratamientos. Este artículo tiene como objetivo la optimización de los factores que influyen en el procesamiento de los cultivares de cacao durante la solidificación del licor. Para eso, se propuso un diseño experimental factorial (DOE) de tres niveles (23) con tres repeticiones. Los tratamientos se organizan en bloques aleatorizados en células divididas (split-plot). El experimento demuestra las mejores combinaciones entre los factores de “flujo de la bomba” y “velocidad de lo transportador” para cada tipo de licor de cacao. La aplicación de este tipo de diseño de experimentos en otros casos puede contribuir a la optimización de procesos con tiempos de set up largos, como los existentes en la industria de alimentos.

Abstract The solidification of the cocoa liquor is one of the most important steps for processing cocoa cultivars. This process is typically characterized as a continuous process, which may become a barrier for the randomization of the applied data treatments. This article aims at optimizing the factors that influence the processing of cocoa cultivars during solidification of liquor. Based on this, it was proposed, as a design of experiment (DOE), a three level factorial plan (23) with three repeated measurements. Treatments were organized in random blocks with divided-cells (split-plot). The experiment presents the best combinations between the factors ‘pump flow’ and ‘conveyor speed’ for each kind of cocoa liquor. The application of this kind of design of experiments in other cases may contribute to optimizing processes with long set up times, such as the ones existent in the food processing industry.

Abstract The interest in improving the quality of engineering education is widely deemed. Due to an increasingly worldwide competition, Lean Manufacturing (LM) has been a relevant subject among industrial engineering graduate programs. Despite the advances in teaching LM principles and techniques, the practical character inherent to LM undermines learning and development of students. In this sense, this study aims at demonstrating a proposal to enhance LM learning in an industrial engineering program. It is a blended proposal that combines traditional teaching methods to problem-based learning (PBL) approach based on real problems of companies undergoing a lean implementation. A first phase of the proposal introduction is illustrated with an example of introducing it in a Brazilian federal university. The findings indicate that PBL may be an effective complementary method for LM learning, especially if graduate students are exposed to real problems in companies that are undergoing a lean implementation and related it to the current body of literature.

A correta utilização do espaço físico de uma fábrica é fator importante para o seu bom funcionamento, já que estabelece a sua organização fundamental, bem como os padrões de fluxo de materiais e informações, com efeitos que se farão presentes no longo prazo. A fim de sistematizar um adequado planejamento de layout, métodos para planejamento do macroespaço, como o SLP (Systematic Layout Planning - Planejamento Sistemático de Layout), podem auxiliar no desenvolvimento de alternativas de layout. Contudo, devido à geração de soluções subótimas com benefícios e desvantagens distintos, o processo decisório da melhor alternativa de layout torna-se crítico para garantir a eficiência e flexibilidade de empresas frente aos diferentes cenários de mercado. Este artigo propõe a utilização de ferramentas de apoio à decisão multicritério em sistemáticas de planejamento de layout, refinando a fase de Seleção do método SLP. A sistemática proposta foi colocada em prática na seleção de alternativas de layout em uma empresa do ramo automotivo, que necessita ampliar seu parque fabril de modo a possibilitar a incorporação de novos equipamentos e otimização do fluxo de materiais. Nove alternativas de macro-layout foram geradas no caso apresentado, sendo avaliada a melhor alternativa geral em relação a sete critérios de avaliação.

The proper use of physical space in a factory is an important operational factor since it establishes its primary organization as well as the material and information flow patterns, with long run impacts. In order to systematize an adequate plant layout, methods for macro-space planning such as SLP (Systematic Layout Planning) have been proposed to support the development of layout alternatives. However, due to the generation of sub-optimal solutions with different pros and cons, the process of determining the best layout alternative becomes critical to assure the company's efficiency and flexibility, when facing different market scenarios. In this paper we propose the use of multicriteria decision support tools in conjunction with SLP. The multicriteria analysis proposed is illustrated in a case study from the automotive industry. The company analyzed is expanding its physical area to house new machines and optimize material flows. Nine different macro-layout alternatives were generated and the best overall alternative was evaluated in relation to seven criteria using AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process).
