ABSTRACT Glufosinate and diquat may have different levels of efficacy in the pre-harvest desiccation of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) plants, and may affect quality of seeds differently, depending on the phenological stage at which they are applied. The objective of this study was to evaluate desiccation with glufosinate and diquat at the phenological stages R6, R7.1, R7.2, and R7.3, and to examine their effects on yield and quality of soybean seeds. The experiment was conducted at two sites in the state of Paraná (PR), Brazil, in the 2020-2021 crop season. A randomized block design was used, treatment groups consisted of application of glufosinate or diquat at R6, R7.1, R7.2, and R7.3, and the control group (without desiccant application). Defoliation, maturity, moisture, yield, and seed quality (vigor and germination) were evaluated. Glufosinate and diquat were effective at desiccation and had a significant effect on defoliation and maturity, with final values ≥ 98.8% and ≥ 99.3% respectively. Treatments can accelerate harvest maturity by approximately 3 d and earlier applications do not necessarily favor this acceleration, most notably in trial 1. However, desiccation at earlier stages reduced seed yield and negatively affected seed quality, with values of only 61.3% and 71.8% of vigor and germination in some situations. The application of glufosinate or diquat was effective in the pre-harvest desiccation of soybean plants, with no differences between the assessed herbicides or phenological stages. The application of glufosinate starting at R7.2 or diquat at R7.3 is ideal to avoid deleterious effects on seed yield. Applications at earlier stages may lead to losses of more than 30% seed yield. The use of diquat or glufosinate before R7.2 may reduce the quality of seeds.

Abstract Asian soybean rust (ASR) is one of the most destructive diseases affecting soybeans. The causative agent of ASR, the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, presents characteristics that make it difficult to study in vitro, limiting our knowledge of plant-pathogen dynamics. Therefore, this work used leaf lesion laser microdissection associated with deep sequencing to determine the pathogen transcriptome during compatible and incompatible interactions with soybean. The 36,350 generated unisequences provided an overview of the main genes and biological pathways that were active in the fungus during the infection cycle. We also identified the most expressed transcripts, including sequences similar to other fungal virulence and signaling proteins. Enriched P. pachyrhizi transcripts in the resistant (PI561356) soybean genotype were related to extracellular matrix organization and metabolic signaling pathways and, among infection structures, in amino acid metabolism and intracellular transport. Unisequences were further grouped into gene families along predicted sequences from 15 other fungi and oomycetes, including rust fungi, allowing the identification of conserved multigenic families, as well as being specific to P. pachyrhizi. The results revealed important biological processes observed in P. pachyrhizi, contributing with information related to fungal biology and, consequently, a better understanding of ASR.

The population biology and production of the stout razor clam Tagelus plebeius Lightfoot, 1786 were investigated on an intertidal sandflat on the southeast coast of Brazil (Enseada Beach, São Sebastião, state of São Paulo) between April 1997 and April 1998. Two rectangular sites of 50 X 10 m parallel to the waterline were established, site A (upper intertidal level) and site B (middle intertidal level), where the samples were taken in an 0.5 x 0.5 m quadrat. High abundances were recorded in winter and spring, with no significant differences between the sites. The high bivalve abundances were related to the presence of very fine homogeneous sediment with low salinities. Tagelus plebeius had negative allometric growth, characteristic of deep burrowers for the relationships DM/SL and AFDM/SL. Parameters of the modified von Bertalanffy growth function were: L∞ = 67.01 mm, K = 1.73 year-1, t0 = -0.11 year, C = 0.43, WP = 0.96. The instantaneous mortality (Z) was 3.12 year-1, relatively high in comparison to other tropical bivalve populations. Secondary production was 1.53 g AFDM m-2 year-1, with a P/B ratio reaching 1.37 year-1. This high turnover ratio (P/B) was related to a rapid population replacement, connected with the short life span and high mortality of the species.

Este trabalho visa estudar a influência de algumas substâncias químicas na corrosividade do solo sobre o duto de aço-carbono, em condições drásticas tais como isenção de técnica de proteção do metal e alto teor de umidade no meio. Amostras de Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo (solo de maior representação geográfica no Brasil) foram contaminadas por três substâncias químicas: ácido sulfúrico, amônia e 1,2-dicloroetano. A agressividade total deste solo foi avaliada durante quatro meses a partir de ensaios de perda de massa e medidas do Índice de Steinrath. Não houve total concordância do Índice de Steinrath com os resultados obtidos nos ensaios de perda de massa para este solo, mostrando que nem sempre é possível definir a corrosividade de um solo considerando apenas uma forma de avaliação.

The present study aims to evaluate the influence of some pollutants on the soil aggressiveness, considering pipelines without protection and high moisture content. The soil used in this study is named Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo, the most representative soil in Brazil according to the Brazilian Soil Classification. Chemical compounds (sulfuric acid, ammonia and 1,2-dichloroethane) were added to soil samples in order to evaluate the soil aggressiveness up to four months, by means of weight loss measurements and Steinrath’s Index. It wasn’t observed total agreement between results obtained by Steinrath’s Index and weight loss tests, leading to the conclusion that soil corrosiveness determination needs more than one assessment method.

O arroz-vermelho e o arroz-preto constituem-se nas principais plantas daninhas infestantes da cultura de arroz irrigado, devido à dificuldade de controle seletivo desta espécie em lavouras comerciais. A utilização de cultivares geneticamente modificados resistentes a herbicidas não-seletivos constitui uma alternativa de controle do arroz-vermelho e arroz-preto em arroz irrigado. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o comportamento de populações híbridas F2 originárias do cruzamento entre o arroz transgênico resistente ao herbicida glufosinato de amônio (arroz GM) e o arroz-vermelho ou arroz-preto. As populações híbridas F2 resultantes do cruzamento entre o arroz transgênico e o arroz-vermelho e preto são viáveis, mas não apresentam vantagem competitiva aparente em comparação com o arroz-vermelho e arroz-preto não-hibridizado, respectivamente. Nas populações híbridas F2, as características morfológicas, como capacidade de perfilhamento, número de folhas produzidas e estatura média das plantas, foram em parte reduzidas e em parte não foram afetadas pela introgressão do gene BAR. A duração média do período entre o transplante e 50% da fase de floração aumentou nos híbridos F2 entre arroz-vermelho e arroz GM, comparado com os parentais arroz-vermelho e arroz GM. Nos híbridos com arroz-preto, observou-se o contrário: as plantas reduziram o ciclo médio em relação a este. O degrane natural médio observado nos quatro cruzamentos foi inferior ao apresentado pelos dois parentais (arroz-vermelho e arroz-preto)-aspecto este também desfavorável à persistência do arroz-vermelho no ambiente. A esterilidade média de espiguetas aumentou e a produção de sementes viáveis foi inferior ou no máximo similar àquela observada no arroz-vermelho e no arroz-preto. A dormência de sementes foi pouco afetada, quando comparadas as populações híbridas F2 portadoras do gene BAR com os parentais arroz-vermelho e arroz-preto. Mesmo assim, os usuários dessa tecnologia deverão adotar, obrigatoriamente, medidas que evitem a possibilidade de cruzamento entre o arroz transgênico e o arroz-vermelho ou arroz-preto.

Red rice is an important weed in paddy rice fields. The use of ammonium glufosinate - resistant genetically modified (GM) rice cultivars is a viable alternative for controlling red rice in cultivated rice crops. The objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior of F2 hybrid population derivates of crossing between ammonium glufosinate - resistant GM rice and red rice. The F2 hybrid population derivates of crossing between GM rice and red rice are viable but do not present any apparent competitive advantage over red rice. The morphological characteristics of the F2 hybrid populations, such as tillering capacity, number of leaves produced and average plant height were partly reduced and partly unaffected by the introgression of the bar gene. The period between rice planting and 50% flowering increased in the red rice x GM rice F2 hybrids, compared to the parental red rice and GM rice. Average seed shattering rate in the four hybrid families was lower than in the red rice ecotypes, with such aspect also being unfavorable to the persistence of red rice in the environment. Seed dormancy of the hybrids was similar to that of the red rice ecotypes. However, management practices should be adopted to avoid crossing between transgenic rice and red rice.

A utilização de cultivares de arroz irrigado resistentes a herbicidas não-seletivos, como o glufosinato de amônio, pode se constituir numa alternativa de controle de arroz daninho em lavouras de arroz irrigado. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a taxa e o sentido do cruzamento natural entre plantas de uma linhagem modificada geneticamente para resistência ao herbicida glufosinato de amônio (arroz GM) e ao arroz daninho. A taxa de cruzamento natural entre o arroz GM como receptor feminino e o arroz daninho como doador de pólen foi de 0,22 e 0,02%, respectivamente para os ecótipos de arroz daninho com glumas de cor palha e com glumas pretas. No caso inverso, quando o arroz daninho foi o receptor feminino e o arroz GM o doador de pólen, a taxa de cruzamento foi de 0,26 e 0,14%, para o arroz daninho com glumas palha e com glumas pretas, respectivamente. Os resultados deste estudo evidenciaram que ocorreu cruzamento natural entre o arroz GM e o arroz daninho em percentuais que variaram de 0,14 e 0,48%, respectivamente para o arroz preto e para o arroz vermelho. A fim de minimizar a possibilidade de hibridação, medidas de controle eficientes devem ser adotadas no sentido de prevenir a coincidência de floração das plantas de arroz daninho com a das plantas de arroz GM cultivado.

The broad spectrum non-selective herbicide ammonium glufosinate, combined with genetically modified glufosinate-resistant rice cultivars (GM rice), may comprise a rice weed control system for red rice and other weeds that infest Brazilian rice fields. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential for outcrossing and gene flow of GM rice to red rice. Natural outcrossing between adjacent field plots (1 m x 1 m) was measured during the 1999/2000 production season in Brazil. The outcrossing rate of the GM rice as the female parent to red rice, as the pollen donor, was 0.22% for strawhull and 0.02% for the blackhull red rice, respectively. In the reciprocal crosses, when GM rice was the pollen donor and red rice, the female parent, the outcrossing rate was 0.26 and 0.14%, respectively, for strawhull and blackhull red rice. The results of this study suggest that, under field conditions, outcrossing of glufosinate-resistant rice to red rice can occur at a measurable level. The potential frequency of hybrids would be minimum under situations where weed control measures help prevent the red rice from flowering.
