Growth and survival of Anadenanthera macrocarpa (Benth.) Brenan (Leguminosae), in an area of caatinga, Alagoinha, PE

Growth and survival of Anadenanthera macrocarpa (Benth.) Brenan was studied in "Fazenda Geraldão" (8°29'28" S and 36°47'00"W), Alagoinha, Pernambuco State, Brazil, from July/1996 to June/1997. The aim of this work was to study growth and survival, besides structure and spatial distribuition of the species. Young and juvenile plants were recruited under the canopy of 10 parent trees. In order to study the structure and spatial distribuition of just part one population itself, an area of 1.000m², was marked out and subdivided into 250 parts, 2m x 2m per part. The total number of all plants was 344, where 211 being young ones and 133 juveniles. Population consisted of 192 especimens; 170 young ones (88.5%), eight juveniles (4.2%) and 14 adults (7.3%). Spatial distribuition indicated a dump pattern. A. macrocarpa showed resistance during the dry season due to their high survival rate (73.3%) in the study area.
