The distribution patterns of the genus Orthophytum (Bromeliaceae) are reviewed, and diagnostic characters given for the 17 species with disjunct occurrence in areas of Central and Eastern Brazil. Most of these species are found in the Serra do Espinhaço, and in some cases reveal extreme endemism within highly restricted areas.
