The role of the Editorial Board and peer reviewers of the Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia

This 80th volume of the Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia provides esthetical, technical and content changes. In addition, the Anais aims to improve quality of texts and illustrations, as well as to enhance scientific value of the articles published. The members of the Editorial Board and the peer reviewers have challenges and awesome tasks to face in order to achieve these objectives.

The members of the national and international Editorial Boards play the role of assistants by formulating the Anais editorial policy, of listeners of the readers' and sponsors' opinion, and of alert guardians of the journal global quality.

The peer reviewers have the monumental and non-transferable task of directly interfering in the intrinsic quality of each article submitted to the journal; and also assume the duty of carefully reading the articles and demanding maximum performance regarding all different aspects of each one, maintaining confidentiality and paying due ethical respect to the authors. The reviewers have innumerous responsibilities and must not neglect them, particularly concerning the investigation articles. They have to pay attention to: representativeness of titles; efficacy of the abstract to convey the essence of the article and make a critical correction of it; appropriateness and consistency of methods in relation to the objectives of the article; the adequate analysis of outcomes and consequent conclusion of the study; and consistency of the text as a whole. Furthermore, the peer reviewers should bear in mind quality of writing, objectiveness and clarity of the text, correct use of anatomical and semiological terms, representativeness and appropriateness of graphs, tables, photographs and other illustrations, and relevance and accuracy of references. Hence, the duties and responsibilities of peer reviewers are several and crucial for the final quality of the Anais.

Since this is a matter of paramount importance, the Scientific Editorial Board of the Anais will promote some discussions on the relevant aspects of scientific publication in journals during the 60th Congress of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology. Some members of the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors will participate in the discussions.

In addition to investing in broadening scientific knowledge of peer reviewers, the scientific editors of the Anais, intend to discuss and propose some academic reward to those who collaborate with the editorial work. It stands to reason that increasing quality of the submitted articles corresponds to rising final quality of the journal.

Thus, the constant development of the Anais - the journal that represents the Brazilian Dermatology and dermatologists - is a joint mission of those providing technical quality, of the services accredited by the Brazilian Society of Dermatology and of the authors who submit their articles.
