Under impact
We are still under the influence of the effects of the very positive news that our impact factor has been measured by the JCR system (for the year of 2010, IF = 0.337) and that the Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia has been promoted to the Qualis B2 range (to be confirmed in an official publication by CAPES - Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel). This new context actually depicts a moment in which our journal grows in reputation among dermatologists in Brazil and the international dermatology community.
Still, it is legitimate and prudent to consider that we have a long path ahead of us, even though we started this journey more than 80 years ago and have shared it with many dermatologists.
We must increasingly encourage our researchers to publish their major works in our journal and also attract international authors. In this context, changing the language of publication (English in the print version and indexing systems; English and Portuguese in the online version) has become an important step, increasing the visibility of the articles and certainly contributing to greater editorial impact.
In addition to the obvious academic and scientific repercussions for our direct contributors, readers of the Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, in their majority members of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, receive an issue of the journal every two months with varying studies of high quality and may develop their own critical thinking.
We stress that, alongside the growth of the Anais in scientific terms, there is a progressive development in the modernization of access to the journal, in particular with regard to new forms of dissemination and information. The e-book format of the journal and its availability for Ipads are part of this process. The reader who takes advantage of these new formats will have access, within a few hours after the journal has been sent to print, to its full version, which is traditionally sent by mail.
Following a recent tradition to comment on some aspects of the journal, it is worth showing that, in the present issue, investigation articles can be very useful to various aspects of the dermatological science. For example, there are four works which are representative of the different research options, all with a foundation for knowledge: the experimental work with animals showing the relationship between nutrition and skin tropism (Leite SN et al. Experimental models of malnutrition and its influence on cutaneous tropism); the study of molecular biology in leprosy, aiding its diagnosis ( Cruz AF et al. Comparison of microsatellites and the Ml MNTH gene as targets for identification of Mycobacterium leprae by PCR in leprosy); the clinical research that shows the importance of recognizing drug susceptibility of dermatophytes, particularly in certain groups of patients (Magagnin CM et al. Antifungal susceptibility profile of dermatophytes isolated from patients with chronic renal failure), and the public health project to facilitate the recognition of cutaneous melanoma in a city in the state of São Paulo (Salvio AG et al. One-year experience of a model program of continuous prevention of melanoma in the city of Jau-SP).
We emphasize that there is a supplement with case reports of great relevance in this issue, representing the diagnostic diversity of the dermatological science.
Finally, we thank the colleagues who have sent their views on the management of the journal. New situations can generate different evaluations among peers, which is natural and democratic. The important thing is to continue to focus on the progressive improvement of the scientific level of the journal and on ethical praxis, without forgetting our commitments to the society as a whole.
