Occurrence of Candida albicans in bovine intestines

The identification and serotyping of C. albicans isolated from the bovine feces of suckling calves were performed. For isolation, the selective and differential Pagano Levin medium with biphenyl added to a final concentration of 0.1% was used. The experiment was conducted with 70 adult animals, 68 calves after weaning and 72 suckling calves. The positivity for C. albicans was observed in nine samples of feces from this last group (12.5%). The determination of serotype of the isolates through the direct agglutination test with monoespecific serum revealed that all samples belong to serotype A. The biphenyl in a concentration of 0.1% proved to be inhibitory for the majority of moulds, without affecting the viability and multiplication of C. albicans. The isolation of Candida albicans from the feces of suckling calves is probably associated in cattle to milk diet.
