Lensectomy results in infantile cataract

SUMMARY

Purpose:

To evaluate the technical difficulties, postoperative complications and final visual acuity after lensectomy in infantile cataract.

Methods:

Surgical and functional results of lensectomy were studied in 47 eyes of 41 children with cataract. The age at the time of surgery ranged between 15 days and 18 months (mean = 7.5 months). Follow-up time ranged from 4 to 108 months (mean = 32 months).

Results:

Postoperative complications occured in 07 (14.89%) of 47 eyes and normal visual acuity or better than 1 ½ eighth below normal happened in 20 eyes (42.55%).

Conclusions:

The small number of secondary opacification in the visual axis allows optic correction and early visual stimulation.
