Resistance to intraocular pressure and histopathological findings in fibrin-glued experimental corneal perforations

SUMMARY

The authors studied the resistance to intraocular pressure and in fibrin-glued perforated corneas for 28 days. A total of 50 eyes of 56 dogs whose corneas were perforated with a 3 mm trephine and glued with fibrin, also mantaining deep anterior chamber and absence of synechia and infection, were evaluated for resistance to intraocular pressure. The lowest borne intraocular pressure was 11 mmHg followed by disruption of the glued corneal perforation at the 2-hour postoperative span) and the highest was greater than 480 mmHg (measurements limits of the equipment). The borne intraocular pressure followed by disruption of the glued corneal perforation rase linearlly between 2 hours and 10 days of postoperative span (p≤0.05). The histopathological study showed progressive scarring and disappearance of fibrin from the glued area during the period of 28 days. Epithelialization occurred on the glued corneal area on third postoperative day. The more the fibrin-glued corneal area turns into a scar the more the borne intraocular pressure rises.
