In 2018, the Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia (ABO) completes 80 years of continuous publication. It is more than time; it is more than a number. It represents a remarkable achievement for the Brazilian and the world ophthalmology. It is a work of generations of ophthalmologists, physicians, scientists and professors.
For eight decades, these individuals dedicated a significant part of their lives to report, review and document the incredible advances in the knowledge of vision science and ocular diseases.
Certainly, several journals are dedicated to ophthalmology, but few have completed 80 years of uninterrupted publication, even in the worse times of the XX century, serving the science and the clinical application with ethics, regularity and constant modernization. In recent years, ABO was indexed in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, Free Medical Journals, Lilacs and SciELO, among others. These events gave definitive international visibility to the Brazilian scientific ophthalmology, with all the glory and responsibility it requires. One recent remarkable example of successful diffusion of relevant clinical and scientific information is the first report of ocular alterations in neonates, associated with the Zika virus outbreak in 2015(11 Ventura CV, Maia M, Ventura BV, Linden VV, Araujo EB, Ramos RC, et al. Ophthalmological findings in infants with microcephaly and presumable intra-uterus Zika virus infection. Arq Bras Oftalmol. 2016;79(1):1-3.). The paper received more than one hundred citations in the medical literature, just in the first year of its publication in ABO.
This year, the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology (CBO) and ABO will invite you to celebrate this memorable anniversary of 80 years. First, the present issue brings an editorial authored by Rubens Belfort Jr.; and the following issues will bring editorials dedicated to the memories and challenges faced by the former editors, Harley E. A. Bicas and Wallace Chamon. Also, the whole collection, from 1938 to 2018, will be available online. Moreover, over the course of the year, the CBO is preparing a series of improvements to make this respectable senior journal one of the most modern vehicles of scientific information in vision and eye research as you deserve.
A special acknowledgment must be directed to the Belfort family and to the CBO. Also, a very special acknowledgment must recognize the dedication of the scientists, physicians and ophthalmologists, who besides their busy careers, write and read the papers published in the ABO. This journal is made for you.
