  De todas as estruturas do globo ocular, o corpo vítreo é a que mais tardou a ser abordada, podendo-se dizer que nem sequer saímos da primeira geração de seus cirurgiões. Esses pioneiros enfrentam muitas dificuldades, dependendo de técnicas e instrumentos que ainda se aperfeiçoam, mas são chamados a intervir em casos onde nada, além dessa decisão, oferece possibilidade de melhora.
