Perforation in ectatic corneal degenerations

SUMMARY

Terrien's marginal corneal degeneration, pellucid marginal corneal degeneration and keratoglobus are ectatic corneal pathologies.

These degenerations produce peripheral thinning and ectasy, irregular astigmatism and increased susceptibility to corneal perforation.

Four cases of ectatic degenerations with corneal perforation are reported (1 patient with keratoglobus, 2 patients with Terrien's marginal corneal degeneration, and 1 patient with pellucid marginal corneal degeneration).

The surgical approach in such degenerations is disputed. The techniques described are poorly studied because of the small number of cases. A great skill is generally required to perform them.

Corneal perforation is a serious complication and its management may be difficult. Preventive procedures must be considered.
