Key factors for the success of performance measurement systems for collaborative benchmarking between construction companies

In recent years, several initiatives have been undertaken to develop benchmarking clubs and performance measurement systems for benchmarking, in different countries. These clubs consist of collaborative groups, providing an environment in which companies can acquire and share knowledge. However, little is known about the conditions under which effective networking takes place and the real benefits achieved by the companies involved. The aim of this paper is to identify key successful factors to build performance measurement systems for benchmarking through a collaborative process among construction companies. This paper also presents the definition of a set of indicators for benchmarking, a framework to evaluate the maturity level of the companies' performance measurement system, as well as the identification of the performance improvements in the companies' measurement system The research strategy adopted in this study was action research, in which a group of twenty construction companies was involved.
