Open-access Optimization of wooden beams according to NBR 7190:2022

Abstract

With technological advances, the application of computational optimization methods in civil engineering, especially in timber beam projects, has become increasingly relevant. Wood, with its availability, lightness, strength, and ease of handling, offers competitive advantages over materials such as concrete and steel, and it is essential to optimize its use to enhance these characteristics. The application of the NBR 7190 (ABNT, 2022) criteria for beam dimensioning is essential, aiming at structural efficiency. The proposed methodology includes a literature review and implementation of optimization algorithms in Python, considering stress, shear, displacement, and stability standards. Parametric studies addressed factors such as humidity, length, strength, and load to calculate the mass of the beams under different conditions. The impacts of humidity, load, and length of the beams, in addition to the specific mass of each species, were evaluated, showing how these parameters significantly influence the variation of the final mass of the beam.
