Changes in the design process of construction companies and property developers brought about by the NBR 15575 - Performance Standard

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a research study aimed at proposing the implementation of a set of tools to improve the design management process, seeking to comply with the Brazilian standards NBR 15575. In order to develop these tools, we conducted an exploratory study on the design management process of property developers and construction companies regarding NBR 15575 compliance. The method adopted was Design Science Research, and it involved performing a diagnosis in four companies, developing tools to assist the design process, design implementation in companies and analysis of its application. The results showed that the companies are facing challenges: lack of knowledge regarding NBR 15575 and the requirements associated with the design management process, which is poorly structured, as well as a lack of integration between design disciplines and their insertion in the product development strategies of the property market. The tools developed help to structure the design process of companies, facilitating the integration of functions and disciplines. The tools were evaluated regarding their implementation in the companies and according to the judgment of senior professionals working in construction and design companies. This study contributes to the practices of the market by offering the tools it developed. From a scientific point of view, it offers a reflection about the integration mechanisms within companies to ensure performance, associated with a diagnosis of the design management process.
