Proposal of a performance measurement system for sustainable management on construction site

Abstract

Although several methods for sustainable management on construction sites have been developed in recent years, not enough tools are available to measure and evaluate its performance. The aim of this study is to propose a measurement system to evaluate the performance of sustainable management on construction sites, determining good practices as a strategy to support the implementation of those indicators and the mitigation of environmental impacts. The research approach adopted was Design Science Research, involving the following steps: (1) a literature review, to identify good practices and indicators proposed in this research study; (2) data collection, to evaluate the use of the proposed indicators; (3) pilot implementation of the proposed performance measurement system on a construction site; and (4) evaluation of the performance measurement system, expected positive impacts, implementation and monitoring of actions, and the usability and ease of the SI. The main contributions of this study are the development of the Performance Measurement System for Sustainable Management in Construction Sites (SIGS), consisting of 26 indicators, in which objective criteria were established to evaluate the environmental impacts; identifying good practices for reducing environmental impacts; and the identification of facilitating factors and hindering factors for SIGS implementation.
