Papers of the XI National Congress of Experimental Surgery, and the XXIV Research Forum of the Brazilian College of Surgeons and the First Meeting of Postgraduation Programs in Surgery, Brazil, 2009

Alberto Schanaider

Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Postgraduation Program in Surgical Sciences, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil. President of the XI National Congress of Experimental Research

To share experiences, to join investigators and to promote the dialogue and the effective partnership in the context of the experimental research are basic movements for the development of any nation.

In a recent time, from 5 to 9 of October of 2009, we organized the XI National Congress of Experimental Surgery in Rio de Janeiro, carried out in parallel with the XXIV Research Forum of the Brazilian College of Surgeons and the Firs Meeting of Postgraduation Programs in Surgery. These events had nearly one hundred professors among which half were lecturers coming from 19 other states of the federation, besides a relevant contingent of students from the Postgraduation Programs in Surgery from several similar areas. Brazilian authorities of Science and Technology, Medicine and members of the board of government offices that support and regulate postgraduate courses in the country were also present.

This success is reflected in the number of abstracts accepted: 209. Among these, 170 were presented in the Free Themes Session exclusive for experimental research and 34 in the Special Poster Session for clinical and surgical issues in anima nobile. This represents a record in terms of national production in this area of knowledge, in a single event.

Both members of the Brazilian Society for the Development of Surgical Research (SOBRADPEC) and The Brazilian College of Surgeons (CBC) had a remarkable participation. The strong alliance between these two houses was essential for the success of this endeavor.

We also give our thanks to the Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Research Support in Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ) and to The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), whose precious support has contributed to the production of this issue.

It is well-known the difficulty that exists to classify promptly what is being done according to field of interest and area of expertise, the research lines and their common interfaces. Thus, by publishing our papers, we will be presenting the scientific Brazilian production to the members of the international community, opening new frontiers and revealing new perspectives based on the merit and the mission to spread knowledge in an area that still lacks of values and so little attended by the existent scientific journals.

The current commemorative edition of the Acta Cirurgica Brasileira, that has his founder, Professor Saul Goldenberg, as one of its academic scientific pillars, outstands for the excellency of its manuscripts and reaches the standards required for its international indexing. As an example of the their quality and multidisciplinary profile, the issues cover a wide range of subjects including the alimentary tract, biological models, experimental urology, ischemia-reperfusion models, wound healing, plastic surgery, effects of drugs, surgical anatomy, experimental oncology, anesthesia and shock.

Soon the Acta Cirurgica Brasileira will receive its impact factor, but our mission will not end at this point; on the contrary, besides the visibility, we hope to add new values, invite new colleagues, in a way to motivate and give a high status to our intellectual production with remarkable quality, aiming to launch our journal as a landmark in this globalized world.
