Open-access EFFECT OF CROP CARE PRACTICES (HAND PICKING OF INFESTED BRANCHES) ASSOCIATED TO BIOLOGICAL CONTROL WITH THE FUNGUS METARHIZJUM ANISOPLIAE ON THE CONTROL OF THE CITRUS BORER, DIPLOSCHEMA ROTUNDJCOLLE (SERVILLE, 1834) (COL.: CERAMBYCIDAE)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this research was to establish a system of integrated control of the citrus borer, Diploschema rotundicolle, by picking up the branches attacked by this pest during its oviposition season (crop care practices) associated to the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae (biological control). The experiment was set with an 18-year-old citrus orchard (Citrus sinensis) and the trees were showing high infestation levei by D. rotundicolle. The efficiency of the crop control made by the grower was compared with that made by the research staff, as well as the association of both methods (cultural and biological control). The fungus was introduced in the borer galleries by using larvae of Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) as vectors. The results have indicated that the integration of the fungus plus cultural control was effective on the control of D. rotundicolle.
