OCCURRENCE OF BLACK SIGATOKA OF BANANA PLANTAIN IN SÃO PAULO STATE, BRAZIL

ABSTRACT

Black Sigatoka, caused by Mycosphaerella fijiensis (an anamorph Pseudocercospora fijiensis), is the most important disease of commercially produced bananas (Musa spp.). In June 2004, black sigatoka was observed at Miracatu, São Paulo State, on cvs Galil 7, Galil 18 and Nam plaintain. The disease was confirmed by observing the characteristics of M. fijiensis in lesions using an optical microscope. This is the first report of black sigatoka in São Paulo State, Brazil.
