ABSTRACT
The present study reports a case of botulism in a female bovine from São José dos Campos, state of São Paulo, Brazil, that presented flaccid paralysis after calving and died, on a property of extensive beef production. It was possible to detect botulinic toxin types C and D from the ruminal and intestinal contents through mouse seroneutralization assay. Cases of bovine botulism are frequent in Brazil, usually associated with the ingestion of carcasses as a result of pica in phosphorus deficient areas, which leads to the ingestion of the toxin produced by the anaerobic bacilli Clostridium botulinum. The lack of mineral supplementation can be a trigger for cases of botulism, together with the absence of adequate management.
