Past, testimony and literary reads: forging new stories about Angola

Abstract

In this article we propose a study of the representation of Angola’s history of the 17th century in the novel A Gloriosa Família (1997), by Angolan writer Pepetela. The study will be based on an interdisciplinary discussion, which intersects the literary with historical and cultural aspects that make up the Angolan past, memory and imagination. In the study we include problems of tradition (VANSINA, 1968) and oralitura ( FALL, 1992), which allow us to understand how the symbolic construction of the elements of the oral tradition make it possible to elaborate a literary representation of Angolan history, giving voice to traditionally marginalized figures of the historical discourse.
