Abstract
This paper aims to examine the work of Cecilia Meireles from the perspective of the presence, in her writings, of a Portuguese (mainly Azorean) cultural heritage that was passed on by ther grandmother, an immigrant from São Miguel. The paper likewise shows, within this heritage, the presence of India in Meireles’ literary work, an interest that was also aroused by her grandmother’s memories, resulting in the publication of Poems Written in India. In receiving and transforming Azorean memory through her own imaginary, Cecilia Meireles occupies a singular place among Brazilian poets. We can say that she occupies a cultural “inter-place”, which becomes a sort of symbolic territoriality.
