Language policy(ies) and power issues

The paper presents and discusses the concepts of power and politics in the field of knowledge called "Language Policy". In order to do so, we initially present and discuss the heterogeneity and complexity of the field considering the concepts of Language Policy and Language Planning. Then we present the genealogical works of the French philosopher Michel Foucault on the relationship among power, knowledge and politics. For the purpose of critical discussion, the article presents a series of cases, both actual and potential ones, of application and intervention of the field of Language Policy, aiming both to discuss the notion of power in concepts and methodologies used by this field of study and to propose an expansion of the locus of intervention of the discipline, considering the theoretical contributions of Michel Foucault on the dynamics of power relations applied to the relationship between languages, languages and subjects, languages and technology, and language and geopolitics.
