THE REBELLION OF 1842 AND THE “TWO BLOODY LAWS” IN THE PROVINCE OF MINAS GERAIS

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is understand how the rebels motivations of rebellion of 1842, the fight against the “two bloody laws”, were presented to the political bases which intended to mobilize in the province of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The sources are mainly the newspapers of Minas Gerais, which protagonize the motivation of rebellion, highlighting O Universal. The situationist newspaper O Correio de Minas has also been thoroughly studied, as O Astro de Minas, A Ordem, and the Maiorista. The article treat of the “two blood laws” - the recreation of the Council of State and the reform of the Process Code - then made an analysis of how the opposition press related this two laws to the interests of its different readers.
