TRAFFIC AND SLAVERY: CARING FOR HEALTH AND DISEASE OF ENSLAVED AFRICANS

Abstract

The History of Slavery and the History of Sciences come together with the goal to elucidate the treatment provided to slaves in the field of health care and care for the diseased.The purpose of this article is to point out the available information on the conditions and diseases of slaves that is to be found in the registries of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia, in prisons, death registers of cemeteries and in the evaluation of health of slaves as recorded in the wills. Such effort intends to contribute to evaluate the possibilities to identify and discuss the existence of a “Slave health system”.
