TERRITORIAL PLANNING OF BRAZILIAN MUNICIPALITIES: MINAS GERAIS, 18-19 CENTURIES

Abstract:

One of the challenges faced by the Brazilian state throughout the nineteenth century was the definition of the area of the increasing number of emancipated municipalities especially since the 1830s. As a consequence, this growing number of municipalities began to demand a greater accuracy regarding the demarcation of their territories. However, the way municipal boundaries were established during this period is a considerable problem. This article aims to discuss the difficulties involved in the demarcation of the territory of Brazilian municipalities in the nineteenth century, through the study of a concrete example in Minas Gerais.
