Museu Paulista is closed for works: critical and collaborative reviews of the painting Independência ou Morte, by Pedro Américo

ABSTRACT

This article discusses the set of collaborative experiences carried out since 2014 with painters from Praça da República and Parque Trianon-Masp as a reaction to the temporary closure of the Museu Paulista and the unavailability of the materiality of the painting Independência ou Morte, by Pedro Américo, during the renovation of that institution. From concepts related to the field of historical painting in the 19th century, to the processes of building memories via official State symbols, to the practice of artistic appropriation and including considerations by the participating painters themselves, this study shows how contemporary art can be combined with other subareas of fine arts to produce critical reviews of historical art works.
