Between alignment and dissonance: photography in Realidade Amazônia magazine (1971) and the endorsement of forest colonization

ABSTRACT

The article aims to examine the approach of photojournalism regarding indigenous and environmental issues during the period of colonization of the Amazon rainforest, conducted by the military government systematically and predatorily in the 1970s. The analysis focuses on the special edition of the Realidade magazine about the Amazon, released in October 1971, which, overall, endorsed governmental actions. However, some photographs featured in the edition did not fully align with this perspective, highlighting moments in which they shaped up as dissonant elements in relation to the official discourse. The study examines various images present in the magazine, with an emphasis on the photographs by Claudia Andujar and George Love, prominent figures in Brazilian photojournalism of the 1970s.
