The A. has recorded three sorts of movie pictures in Brazil related to national history, from the beginning of the centurv. until the end of the Estado Novo in the forties: movie pictures featuring historical characters ano events, also including religious subLects (1906-1944), adaptations from literature (1910-1931) and patriotic-militaristic movies (1917-1930). As a pretace to the list he discusses the general atlributes of the Brazilian historical cinema as a category, as well as the purposes of the 'educational movie piclures' of the period.
