From popular housing to the bourgeois home: ways of living registered on the official records of Ribeirão Preto in the 1920s

ABSTRACT

By surveying, systematizing and analyzing the approval processes of the Works Board available in the collection of the Public and Historical Archives of Ribeirão Preto (APHRP), this paper studies the architectural characteristics of the urban house in 20th-century Ribeirão Preto, from its implementation, plastic intention and programmatic typology. The text contributes to the historiography of architecture, showing how such architectural characteristics were tied to political, economic, social and cultural contexts, coexisting with the architectural scenario of large Brazilian capitals, especially São Paulo, with the appearance of new programs, changes in implementation and innovations in the formal repertoire. Its theoretical background includes recent studies, such as that of Jorge Lody; local authors, such as Adriana Capretz Silva; well-established authors, such as Carlos Lemos and Nestor Goulart Reis Filho; and authors who investigate the international context, such as Monique Eleb and Anne Debarre.
