A technique that allows for a figurative and yet modern art, photomontage was much used by artists of the Soviet avant-garde. Employed at first in book and magazine covers, illustrations and posters, photomontage later suited the ends of the Communist Party in the hands of artists like Klutsis, El Lissitzky and Rodchenko.
