Electroencephalographic aspects of the fourteen and six per second positive spikes

The "14 and 6 per second positive spikes" pattern, first described and correlated in 1951 by Gibbs and Gibbs, has remained absent from several electroencephalographic reports. Such omission may be due to the fact that the routine EEG techniques employed by many electroencephalographers do not offer favorable conditions for the recognition of this pattern. The author describes the methods he uses and comments upon several factors which have allowed him to disclose the pattern in 12% of the tracings run in his Service. He shows that this abnormality stands out more clearly when opposite ears are used as reference with the so called monopolar technique. He shows the usual absence of the pattern in the awake tracings and the difficulties to recognize it, even in drowsiness and sleep, when bipolar technique only is used. Several illustrations are presented.
