In memoriam
Professor Klaus Felgenhauer was born on November 10th, 1933 in Gross-Strelitz, Oberschlesien, Germany. He graduated in Medicine in Leipzig University. In 1959, he moved to West Germany. At this time, he started to work in the field of biochemistry and began his specialisation in neurology and psychiatry in the "Nervenklinik der Universität Köln". During 1964-1965, he was an invited-scientist in the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, USA. He became professor and the head of the research in the Neurology-Psychiatry Clinic in Köln University during 1977-1982. In 1982, he continued his career as professor of Neurology and also the head of the Department of Neurology at Göttingen University.
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and the blood-brain barrier were his principal and successful fields of study and he was one of the pioneers in clinical neurobiochemistry. Professor Klaus Felgenhauer highly encouraged a modern CSF analysis based on the relationship between molecular and clinical research of the inflammatory and degenerative central nervous system diseases. He became one of the most important researchers in the field of CSF analysis in Europe.
The Brazilian Neurologists had the privilege of Professor Felgenhauer's visit in 1997. In Rio de Janeiro City, he impressed us with his original presentation about Music and Neurology. The lecture about "Psychopathology of Transitory Global Amnesia exemplified by the case of Siegfried in Richard Wagner's Goterdämmerung" was unforgettable. In the field of CSF, he introduced the new concepts about the laboratory diagnosis of brain diseases during his stay in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Besides, he was very interested to see our neurological cases, and discussed them with enthusiasm, calling attention to the importance of the CSF analysis in tropical countries. In Brazil, he also was impressed by the friendly people, the size of our country, the warm climate all year long and the artistic-historical-cultural significance of our Carnival.
