Direct lateral and posterolateral approaches for total hip arthroplasty: comparison of postoperative gait function

With the overwhelming development of surgical materials and the longer life expectancy of the world population, total hip arthroplasty procedures have been increasingly frequent. Although surgical techniques have greatly improved in recent years, some controversies are still unsolved. In this study, the author compared the gait function in 33 patients submitted to a total hip arthroplasty through lateral and posterolateral approaches. Gait analysis was used to quantify kinematics data and detect the presence of Trendelenburg sign on patients with at least one year of follow-up. In the study, there were no significant differences between both surgical approaches concerning the studied parameters.
