"Along with the innovative dimension that the Internet brings [...] there

arises a dimension of political character which calls for knowledge for

the public good, critical for social and economic development"

Abel Laerte Packer, 2006

As we move in the direction of sustainability and accessibility, Acta Paulista de Enfermagem (APE), a periodical that began in early 1988, has as its mission the publication of scientific papers that add value to the area of health. We are found within important indexes, especially the SciELO collection and the database of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), and our first impact factor presented by the ISI in 2011 was 0.375; Smago/Scopus 0.3 and factor H = 5.

With the change of editors - Chief, Scientific and Executive - which occurred in June 2011, immediate steps were taken to adjust the criteria for selection of articles submitted to this journal focusing on our desires: methodological rigor, and studies that produce an impact on clinical practice, management, education and research. In addition, we adjusted the composition of the Editorial Board to promote a multidisciplinary analysis of scientific production with multiple views comprising the fields of knowledge, scheduled for early 2012, including criteria such as being a researcher of CNPq and having a score of h> 3.

However, the most important innovation is intended to meet the pressing need of this journal for exclusive digital circulation, considering the high demand for submissions - about 200 articles / month - as well as the prospect of attracting a wider audience through improved visibility, speed of dissemination and universal free access. Digital formatting will also enable us to provide the "ahead of print" service, interaction with the authors, as well as to increase the dissemination of scientific articles through the provision of 25 articles per issue, and eight issues per year. To this end, professionals were incorporated into the support team of APE.

Another change worth mentioning in this Editorial, is the political will of its editors for this journal to be not only a formal instrument for the dissemination of original papers, but also to provide subsidies, especially to new authors, to support them in improving their manuscripts. Thus, we intend to provide links on the home page of APE about: the desirable characteristics for writing a quality manuscript; the fundamentals used in the review process of submitted articles; and, the need for authors to indicate, in a letter to the editor, the relevance of the work for professional practice in the areas of health and nursing.

Thus, we believe that our work, in the short to medium term, will enhance the transmission of scientific articles in digital media, with high quality and the production of greater impact, in the areas of health and nursing which should certainly influence the extent of the upward curve in the bibliometric indices of APE.
