In face of the recent changes in the funding system and the implementation, by regulatory agencies, of new criteria to assess academic research in British universities, the author discusses the challenge posited to these institutions in their task of producing knowledge and analyses public policies and their impact on higher education. The article also proposes alternatives to be taken by the academic communityin light of this predicament.
