Pathé-Baby: literature as if it were cinema

ABSTRACT

This paper seeks to investigate the intrinsic relation between literature and cinema in Pathé-Baby, published by António de Alcântara Machado in 1926. For that, a theoretical contribution was conducted, by names like Rajewsky and Prümm to recruit the theory of intermidiality; Lotman, Bilharino and Hutcheon to deepen the issues surrounding the operational and aesthetic processes of cinema; and Friedman and Jahn with the purpose to analyze the behavior of the narrator in the work. From the results, it is evident, in addition to the emulation power of Pathé-Baby - which appropriates elements of cinema, acting like a silent film - the visual expressiveness that the book presents, bringing the arts closer to a fruitful dialogue between image and text.
