THE PLANE, THE BIRD, THE ANGEL: WINGS OF PROGRESS IN GUIMARÃES ROSA AND PAUL KLEE

ABSTRACT

With the objective of revisiting a historical milestone of Brazilian modernism and identifying imaginaries of progress present in two artistic works, this article proposes a dialogue between art, literature, politics, and history. Set in the construction period of Brasilia and in the workers’ experience during this process, the key pieces to elucidate these images are the tale “The Margins of Joy”, by Guimarães Rosa, and the painting Angelus Novus, by Paul Klee. As a result of this analysis, the approach and interpretation of different artistic languages point to a reflection on the nuances of the modernist project of development, as well as on the impacts of progress on subjectivities and territorialities.
