Biology and preference for oviposition of Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) on leaves of Solanum tuberosum (L.) and S. berthaultii (Hawkes) genotypes

Effects of leaves of two introductions of Solanum berthaultii (L.) wild species, three Solanum tuberosum (L.) cultivars and two S. tuberosum x S. berthaultii hybrids on the biology and ovipositon preference of Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) were evaluated under laboratory conditions. The growth, fecundity and adult longevity on the hybrids NYL 235-4 and N 140-201, with type A glandular trichomes, were similar to the observed on the cultivars Aracy, Apuã and Itararé. S. berthaultii PI 473331 (with type A and B trichomes) and PI 473334 (with type A trichomes) slightly affected the larval developmental time (PI 473331) and pupal weight (PI 473334). However, in free choice and no-choice tests, these introductions of S. berthaultii were non-preferred for oviposition by P. operculella, while the other genotypes did not affect the insect oviposition.

Insecta; Gelechiidae; potato tuber moth; host plant resistance; oviposition non-preference
