New concept for quilombo: identity and territory within theoretical definitions

The present article deals with new definitions of maroons' communities elaborated from the necessity to obtain official recognition which could ensure them the constitutional right of property over their lands . It rejects a classic historiography view which sustains the idea of maroons' isolation, as well as their unique formation by means of escaping, in favor of an enlarged concept that elevates territory and identity - especially linked to resistance - to the condition of crucial elements in determining these social groupings maroons' remainders.
