Science and sustainable development: beyond positivism and post-modernity

The article discusses the epistemological consequences of adopting a concept of sustainable development that explicitly presupposes that the biosphere and the human societies are complex and open systems. It is argued that the Complexity Theory and the Critical Realism are fundamental approaches for enhancing the contributions of science to the challenge of sustainability.
