A GIS to support the evaluation of Higher Education courses’ infrastructure

The purpose of this article is to present a proposal for a Geographic Information System (GIS) that provides support for the management of the university infrastructure, in particular meeting the demands for data for the course evaluation process conducted by INEP/MEC. The space managed by the Polytechnic School of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) was used as a case study to experiment the proposal. The research presented here was carried out in four stages: 1) literature review looking for examples of other GIS used for university infrastructure management as well as the demands of INEP / MEC, 2) detailing the demands of the university through interviews with managers and technicians the UFBA Environment and Infrastructure Superintendence (SUMAI) and the Polytechnic School. Based on this information, it was defined which spatial data are needed for the system, the attributes and additional information (such as photos and floor plans), 3) elaboration of a method for calculating Infrastructure quality indicators based on the criteria of INEP/MEC and 4) examples of possible outputs of the proposed system for its application in the management of the physical space of a university unit, illustrating its potential.
