Paraense Dramatic Conservatory: an ephemeral and controversial association of men of letters and artists (1873-1887)

Abstract

This article focuses on a topic that has been little contemplated by Brazilian theater historians: the Dramatic Conservatory of Pará. Its foundation formed the broader framework for creating a series of institutions linked to ideas of progress, modernity, and civilization that delegated the task of disseminating arts, knowledge, and teaching in the Grão-Pará to provincial elites. It was assigned the task of promoting provincial theater and administering the Theater of Peace, objectives which it could not perform. Following the history of the Dramatic Conservatory of Pará offers a privileged opportunity to enlarge the understanding of a moment when the Brazilian empire invested in policies linked to the national image by mobilizing cultural resources, of which the creation of the Dramatic Conservatories was a part of, and to get an approximate view of how this Dramatic Conservatory of Pará answered to them.
