Joint oceanographic assembly, 1982: preliminary announcement

ANNOUNCEMENT

Joint oceanographic assembly, 1982. Preliminary announcement

Canada will host the next Joint Oceanographic Assembly (JOA) in the summer of 1982. It will be held at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, August 2-13.

This will be the fifth in a series of international oceanographic Assemblies, the last was in Edinburgh, Scotland, in September 1976.

The Assembly is being organized under the auspices of the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and other international organizations affiliated with it. A national organizing committee has been established in Canada to attend to local arrangements for hosting the Assembly in Halifax. The committee is formed of representatives of Dalhousie University, McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, the National Research Council of Canada, the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Province of Nova Scotia.

The scientific program will consist of selected topics of broad interdisciplinary interest in marine science. The selection of subjects for the symposia will be the responsibility of an International Steering Committee appointed by SCOR.

This preliminary announcement of the location and date of the 1982 Joint Oceanographic Assembly is made to enable ocean scientists throughout the world to make a note of the event in their diaries - and also in the hope that early plans will be developed in each country to secure funds to ensure the participation of their scientists.

Further information regarding the scientific program and local arrangements for the Assembly will be issued in due course. All correspondence concerning the Assembly should be addressed to Leo O'Quinn, Executive Secretary, National Steering Committee for JOA, c/o Canadian Committee on Oceanography, 240 Sparks Street, Ottawa, Ontario, KlA OE6, Canada.
