Recent sedimentation rates derived from 210 Pb and 137 Cs methods and inflling estimate of the Jacuipe estuary, Bahia, Brazil.

Abstract:

The present work estimated the conditions of inflling of the Jacuipe estuary, located in the north coast of Bahia, using geochronology 137Cs and 210Pb combined methods and verifcation of accommodation sediments spaces still exist. Two sedimentation rates were identifed in this estuary more less 70 years old. The frst, from 3,7 mm y-1, refers to the natural conditions of sedimentation that occurred until the mid-1960s, and the second, more recent, is probably due to anthropogenic influences in the watershed which increased the contribution sediments to 6,0 mm y-1. It was estimated that Jacuípe estuary, with the remaining accommodation space of 6.97 x 106 m3, can be completely flled in less than 300 years. This time interval may drop by half if it continues the current rate of sedimentation and hydrological changes of confrmation provided in this basin.
