Foreword

FOREWORD

The I LAWHEP was a successful meeting of researchers from Latin American universities and research institutes working on high energy phenomenology.

There were more than sixty participants, including faculty members, postdoctoral associates, and graduate students, from twenty different institutions. All of them contributed to a lively scientific atmosphere. The program had five lectures, given by professors Boris Kopeliovich, from Universidad Santa Maria, Valparaiso, Chile, Sergio Sciutto, from Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina, Takeshi Kodama, from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Gustavo Burdman, from Universidade de São Paulo, and Attilio Cuchieri, from Universidade de São Paulo at São Carlos, in Brazil, twenty five talks, and twenty seven posters.

The I LAWHEP took place in Porto Alegre, from 1st to 3rd December 2005, at the Instituto Latinoamericano de Estudos Avançados, ILEA, from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. It was partially supported by CNPq, and by UFRGS, USP, UFRJ, FURG, and it required some investment from all of the participants.

The level of the presentations was very high, with lively discussions. The poster sessions had a full attendance. A committee of lecturers has chosen the best posters (in terms of physical content and presentation). The prize for the best poster was given to Diego Gratieri, from Unicamp, advised by Orlando Peres; mentions were given to Bruno Taketani, from UFRJ, advised by Eduardo Fraga, and Beatriz Siffert, from UFRJ, advised by João R.T. de Mello and Maurício Calvão.

The LAWHEP has an important role in the community of high-energy latinoamerican phenomenologists. It is dedicated to update the contributions to this field, to promote scientific interactions within the community, to create the possibility of new exchanges and collaborations, and to foster contacts with experimentalists as well. The contributions to the meeting are presented in these proceedings, based on the refereeing standards of the Brazilian Journal of Physics, with the encouragement of professor Silvio Salinas, and the efficiency of Neusa Martin.

It is important to mention that from our proposal to the colleagues and the meeting itself we just had two months to organize this event, which demonstrates how motivated, mature, organized and cooperative is the community in this area of physics in Latin America. The event was chaired by M. Beatriz Gay Ducati, from UFRGS, with the cochair Rodolfo Sassot, from Universidad de Buenos Aires, and an organizing committee composed by Oscar Éboli, from USP, Eduardo Fraga, from UFRJ, Orlando Peres, from Unicamp, Adriano Natale, from IFT, Alberto Santoro, from UERJ, Ronald Shellard, from CBPF, and Carlos Alberto Garcia Canal, from UNLP. The local committee was composed by Werner Sauter (UFRGS), Magno V.T. Machado (UERGS), Álvaro Ayala (UFPel), Marcos Rodrigues (FURG), with the invaluable work of the GFPAE graduate students, Marcos André Betemps, Luiz Fernando Mackedanz, and João Thiago de Santana Amaral.

The II LAWHEP is coming.
