ROBERTO LUZZI'S SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY

EDITORIAL

Roberto Luzzi was born and educated in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His Date of Birth is 26 August 1936.

He was M. Sc. graduated in 1962 and PhD in 1966. Both degrees were from the Institute of Physics "J. A. Balsiero" at Bariloche, Argentina. The subject of his master thesis was on the physical metalurgy and of his doctoral thesis on the theory of magnetism. The theme of his doctoral thesis was prepared at the Institute of Physics of the University of São Paulo (Brazil) and at Brazilian Centre for Physical Research, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). His post-doctarate was done at Purdue University (USA), during the period 1965-1967 as a Research Associate.

From 1968 to 1970 Roberto was Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California (USA). Since 1971, he is Full Professor of Physics at the Institute of Physics "Gleb Wataghin" of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp, Brazil). He is Senior Associate Member of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (Trieste, Italy) and also Full Member of the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo.

In 1976 Luzzi was a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow (USA). He received the "Gleb Wataghin" award for scientific production (Unicamp, 1985) and "Zeferino Vaz'' award for academic achievements (Unicamp, 1994/95 and 1997/98).

Dr. Luzzi is a very productive researcher, and played an important role in the establishment of the Physics Graduate School at Unicamp. He still has several graduate students and some post-doctorate researchers working with him.

He is referee of several international journal of Physics.

For all this, for been a nice person and for been a real gentleman, Prof. Dr. Roberto Luzzi deserves to be remembered and to be paied homage in his sixtieth anniversary. This special issue of the Brazilian Journal of Physics is one of those purposes. Another purpose to render homage to him was the "Prof. Roberto Luzzi's 60th Birthday Workshop" organized, last year, by the Institute of Physics "Gleb Wataghin''.
